Worst SAFC manager: MON or Bruce?

if bent hadn't shown hos true colours it would've been oh different for bruce. Everyone was expecting big things from MoN and he deliveres fuck all. so him

Bruce made a lot of mistakes with transfers and what he said in the media but was far better for SAFC than MON who was a monumental fuck up bar the first 10 games or so

It is close, but Bruce really fucked up what was our best chance of establishing ourselves as a top half club. He basically had a clean slate when he arrived but wasted money on average players time and time again and was unable to keep any of the bigger "egos" happy. In all three of Bruce's seasons, we spent time near the bottom. O'Neill didn't have the same situation as Bruce, and was lumped with the same shite we can't shift now. O'Neill's tactic of trying to sign 1 or 2 quality players last summer was more on the right wavelength than Bruce's plan of signing "good lads who run around a lot and work hard". O'Neill's tactics were absolutely shite like.

Are you suggesting they are the worst managers we have ever had or is it just terrible grammar? I'm not sure either makes the top three worst of all time - though when looking at resources blown for return MON perhaps deserves a nomination at least.

equally as bad in the end. No point splitting hairs.

From January 11 to October 12 we were dire under Bruce both in terms of results and performances. From March 12 to March 13 it was the same under O'Neill.

TBF the only one who has been any good in the last 50 years has been Stokoe and Reid. Other than that successive managers have promised loads but delivered little of note.
Dennis smith was canny.

We had about 3 good months with MON, the rest was disgusting, negative football. Apart from the 11/12 start and the 10 & 14 winless game runs, Bruce wasn't always that bad.

I think Bruce did the worse job.

Bruce inherited a more favourable situation and had more time. Lots of time to plan, a young star who hadn't yet played for us but would go onto be an England player, loads of cash and a blank template to create a proper team. He failed. In one summer of craziness he let Steed, Zenden, Gyan, Mensah, Onuaha, Henderson, Muntari and Welbeck leave and signed Gardiner, Vaughan, O'Shea, Brown, Wickham, Bendtner and McClean to replace them. Wow. He also openly criticised the fans, a criticism that the media have latched onto and made it just that little bit harder to attract players in the post Bruce era.

MON inherited a desperate situation. Clearly he got a bit lucky to begin with. But ultimately MONs record was quite simply - he didn't turn around the shite Bruce left us with. MON utterly failed to put any kind of imprint on the club - he just looked to defer relegation by a year. MONs football was as bad as I've ever witnessed. But he took over a sit situation and left a similar situation.

I remember getting slated on here after the West Ham away game last year telling people we were shit and would do well to stay up whilst also saying I still believed MON was the best man for the job. Bed wetter, knee jerker, WUM etc. Sadly I feel the same one year on about the di Canio regime. I think he's got good ideas and I'd like to see how they play out and I love the guys passion - but we're in another battle here. If we get to 40 points we've done exceptionally well.

I agree 100% with this. MON inherited a desperately poor squad, much of which we'll be stuck with for the foreseeable future. I would love to know the reason(s) why SAFC/MON didn't change more of the squad last summer when it was pretty obvious by then that, for instance, we had the worse central midfield players in the top-flight. I think, however, that in the end simply the the task of resurrecting SAFC was too much for MON and he was looking increasingly weary in his last few weeks. I'm still desperately disappointed that things didn't work out for him here.
