Worst Away Day you've done

Late 80s, can't remember the exact year, West Ham on a Tuesday night. Made a last minute decision to go. Me and a pal got the overnight bus down, arrived about 6:30am iirc. Spent the day wandering around London with not much money. Got over to West Ham about half five because we didn't know exactly where it was. Very dodgy place, so we got ourselves into this pie shop and lingered as long as we could. Got in the ground at 6:30, feeling pleased with ourselves having made it. We got beat 8-1... Three different keepers on the night, including Beardsley. Hardly anyone down, but a canny few London mags. Walking back to the tube afterwards a few lads set about us. A minor scuffle before the police chased them off. Made our way back to Victoria for the night bus and we had a long hungry journey home. Nee money left, got off at Durham and walked back to Stanley. About a day and a half of mostly misery. Still, didn't stop us going again.
1986! I remember it.

Had a similar journey in 1989 on the Non Stop Clipper from Birtley services first thing, didn't have much money to speak of just had some dope and the entrance fee .. got gubbed 5-0 on a Wednesday night all their goals were great hits .. back to Victoria for the overnight Clipper back ..

Somehow managed to get promoted six months or so later.

Notts County away, the (almost) relegation game. What a bunch of Spineless Cowards. Ian Rogerson sticks out for some reason. Stayed up, but still went home feeling empty after having watched that lot cower.
Couldnt get in away end like hundreds of others. Fighting amongst ourselves. Sunny day though
Boro away Xmas 86.

Mental
.
Singing at half time was the highlight

Plymouth early 90's. Left on the coach at midnight the night before and got dropped off at Exeter at 5am, only place open was McDonalds so sat in there for ages before getting back on the coach. Can't remember anything about the game but didn't get back home til after midnight the following day, I was completely dead on my feet.

Brighton away play off semi’s.
Lost first leg 1-0.
Back to the Withdean, an absolute shite hole of a ground. Rained all evening.
Pulled goal back then into Extra Time. Took the lead, time was up and all we needed to do was launch it upfield one more time.
They got a throw in, still see it now and Adam Virgo (bastard) got his head to it taking it into pens.
We always lose on pens and did so.

Brighton fans were arseholes taunting us on the pitch.
Devastated for days as became Friends with Andy King the Manager at the time.
Absolute silence in that car driving home.
One of my favourite games ever that.

Too many too many no shows and spineless performances to pick just one game, though a few of our particular gutless performances, immediately spring to mind.

FA Cup semi final vs Millwall at Old Trafford.
(if we'd won that game, we'd be guaranteed European football, the following season)
We were shockingly poor, and it was no surprise when a poor (but better than us) Millwall, beat us again, for the 3rd time, that season.

Notts County away.
A cowardly showing, and we stayed up only because of results elsewhere.
The worse match I can remember, for Sunland fans attacking one another, with fights breaking out all across the away end, as the players surrendered without a fight, on the pitch.

Coventry away, in the League Cup.
Steve Livingstone I presume, filled his boots that night, while our players filled their hogga's out on the pitch.
Again, mass fights amongst our own, broke out in the away section.

Definitely not the worst ever but I remember trekking to Stoke on my own, stood in the Stoke away end and if you’ve ever been to the stadium the winds that come through the open sides of the stands are ridiculous. T shirt only I was absolutely freezing I’ll never forget.

Wes Brown got sent off before we’d hardly got going, and it felt like we hardly touched the ball all game. Think we lost 2-0 chasing shadows all game and to round it off, it was never a red

edit: losing 5-1 at white hart lane after taking the lead, which left us bottom of the league was pretty rank, but always have a good time in London regardless of the result.
That Stoke Game was my first visit to Stoke! it was sunny not a bad day but as soon as you got in the ground fecking freezing..... that game was awful....

So many grim away days when you think about it! West Brom away, PDC last game springs to mind West Brom outplayed us all over the park and looked like they'd score every time they got in our half! also this was the last visit to the Vine which I love ant wait too go again.

Posted this before, on a leaving early thread I think. Ipswich away, just after Christmas, we had been at the outlaws for Chrimbo and had got the tickets for the game but after that I broke a small bone in my shoulder (had a slight argument with a Mercedes whilst out running) and had my arm in a sling. Anyway, I was in pain with the injury, we were losing 4-0 iirc so we left at half time. Close second was that Southampton defeat under Poyet, what a terrible train journey to Poole (was there for the weekend for a friends bithday party) that was, having to endure jubilant home fans talking about the game.

Probably Derby away in 2001. We lost 1-0. The atmosphere was shite in the away end strangely. We played shite in a shite forgetful match. I picked up a nasty cold on the coach on the way down and felt awful all day.

Went down to Stoke in 2008, evening game, lost 1-0 to a long throw, was trapped in a car park for what seemed like an eternity. Got back around 4am and I am sure I had school in the morning.

More recently went to Parkinson’s first game at Wycombe. Took about twenty hours on a dry coach there and back and I don’t think we had a shot on target.

Coventry away the other season, went straight out from afters since we'd been it out all night. Lost 1-0 and the hangover kicked in around half time. Didn't get back home till 10ish either

Hate the journey home especially when you’ve been beaten

A bit predictable and even though it had been a canny day and a cracking match beforehand, the Charlton play off final still tops the worst list.
That journey was the worst journey home from a game of footy I've ever known. Everyone to a man was silent all the way home. It was gut wrenching. Even the mags 5.1 didn't come close to matching that postmatch feeling :(
(makes me shudder still just typing this)
