Worst Away Day you've done

While stationed at Lee on Solent, I was at Fratton Park, in January 1975. I was sat up in the main stand with a pompey fan and his young son, we scored first and I started winding up the kid - who just got more and more irritated. Second half Portsmouth rattled in 4 goals in next to no time and the kid started having a right pop at me. Its a lesson I've never forgot.

5-0 defeat at Ipswich between Xmas and NY in 2001.
Boro lost 3-0 with Maccarone running us ragged.
Hull and Bradford cup games under Poyet.

Definitely not the worst ever but I remember trekking to Stoke on my own, stood in the Stoke away end and if you’ve ever been to the stadium the winds that come through the open sides of the stands are ridiculous. T shirt only I was absolutely freezing I’ll never forget.

Wes Brown got sent off before we’d hardly got going, and it felt like we hardly touched the ball all game. Think we lost 2-0 chasing shadows all game and to round it off, it was never a red

edit: losing 5-1 at white hart lane after taking the lead, which left us bottom of the league was pretty rank, but always have a good time in London regardless of the result.

Flipping the other thread on its head, what's the worst away experience you've had.

Not in terms of result but the overall day. For me it was Everton away in 2017 under Simon Grayson in the League Cup. Travelled down by myself on a dry supporters bus, lost 3-0 and may as well not have showed up.

Everton won in first gear and there was about 400 SAFC fans down. Just an absolute waste of time from start to finish and one of those proper 'what am I doing with my life' kinda nights.

Everton 7-1 for me.

Similar to you, I drove down by myself and had a Newcastle supporting friend ringing me all the way back to take the piss.
I would have done exactly the same if it was the other way round.

The obvious one 5-1 against them. Horrendous.

The 2-0 against them under Keane. Evans and Bardsley both injured, mcshane let Owen get a free run and header 4 mins in. I was seriously hungover too.

Everton 5-0 Boxing Day 1999 & 7-1 November 2007. Haven’t been back to goodison since.

West Brom 2009 under Sbragia, Christ almighty.

Notts County away, the (almost) relegation game. What a bunch of Spineless Cowards. Ian Rogerson sticks out for some reason. Stayed up, but still went home feeling empty after having watched that lot cower.
Oh yes, that one was horrific. I’ve been to worse though. How about Wolves when Armstrong and Byrne were both sent off within the first 15 minutes. Wolves were on a horrible run of form and were truly abysmal against our 9 men …. But we still f**ked it up again by conceding the winner in the last 5 mins….

Has to be Palace in the 2004 play off. Mackem living in London and dressed up for a night out after. Got soaked by a palace twat who decided to throw a pint in the away end at half time. Got pinned against the gate as our fans oiled in while my palace mates laughed their tits off. The return leg which I travelled up with the palace fans on a special charted plane was ok as they didn’t give me stick but my palace so called mates who didn’t travel ring and ring in the early hours. I f####in hate palace

League (Milk) Cup final 85.
Promised myself after 73 I would wait until the Lads got to Wembley to go there. Had lots of chances for international games but always said no.
Was stationed in Plymouth.
No ticket.
Train to Durham on Thurs. Bus to Hetton.
Bought ticket in pub £150.
Coach to Wembley.
Worst game I ever saw (fuck off Clive Walker)
Coach back to Hetton.(Armed forces rail ticket so had to get back to Durham)
Hitched to Durham skint.
Train back to Plymouth Sunday.

Worst weekend of my life.

If not the Wembley losses then relegation at Man C. Proud of the fanbase that day from us and them in truth but sad time when whistle went. Plus Coventry when thumped 5 0 and I was kicked out.
Stoke away as a Wolves lad. I was literally about 11 with my mate. Stoke raided the pub and bottled my old man while he was playing pool with us kids. Ended up in A/E
waiting for me old man to get stitched up. Naughty 40 shitesters. Got my own back in the bad old days.
Not good. Terrible that

Brighton away when they played at some athletics track miles out of the city. The sort of place that should never see a football match.
I’d have Wimbledon (MK Dons then maybe?) at the hockey stadium a close second for the same reason. Only slightly better than Brighton as we beat the Dons

I honestly don't think I've had a bad one as I've always had a good laugh regardless of the result.

But I do remember playing Carlisle in the FA Cup 3rd round in the mid 90s. We drew 1-1 at Roker and I went to the replay at Brunton Park with the Shields branch. I cant remember why but the bus couldn't park in the car park.

Anyway we hammered them 3-1 but near the end of the game the tannoy came on with a message for the Sunderland Shields branch supporters that our bus was parked on a street just outside the ground - cue a huge roar from the home end!!!

As you can imagine there were pitch battles around the bus and at one point Flanny was chasing a few off with a traffic cone. Bastards broke the air brakes on the bus though and we had to crawl home at 30mph. Took us about 6 hours to get back!!!
..Paul Dodds was in his element them days. Few battles that year, when they tried to storm The Fort, hell on.

Either the 8-0 at Southampton or the 2-1 FA Cup defeat at Brentford, Gary Breen is still turning to try and find DJ Campbell.

Need to have a think.... but in recent years...

Brentford 3-3 Sunderland

After being 3-0 up at HT. The Grayson effect.

Agree with most away games having some sort of redeeming features though... travel is education, especially if you get to talk to home fans.

Preston away under Keane. Was loving away games at the time and that brought me straight back down to earth.

Bolton away in the Prem think it was Keanes first season or the season before. Rubbish, soulless ground.

The two I’ve been arrested at, and had to make my way home from Liverpool cells and Middlesbrough cells the next morning.
