Worst Away Day you've done

Is there anyone on here who was at all of the 8-0's.

West Ham, Watford and Southampton. I was at the Saints game and my mate Fishboy from here was at Southampton and Watford.

Blackburn in the PL, midweek, swapped my shifts to go, lost my tickets, had to buy them again, travelled on a dry bus full of absolute goons and we got beat 2-0.

Trains every week from then on.
I got ALS bus to that game. Ji missed an open goal
Wigan away 2009.
They had just been battered 9-1 off spurs so thought we had a good chance, lost 1-0 in typical SAFC fashion, not even sure we had a shot on target.

Reading away in the Cup was awful. I remember it pissed down , and we were on an open terrace behind the goal. This was at their old stadium. We scored early then just sat back, waiting for the inevitable .
Just remember totally flat atmosphere , drenched, pissed off , and the hangover kicking in quite early. Shit ground as well, nothing to define it if you know what I mean . Just bland.

Not as bad a result as the thumping under Reid there, but I diint go to that , so that was alright.

Despite that fact we won I hated Milton Keynes as an away day. It is without a doubt the most soulless place I've ever been to.
Their fans made no atmosphere and the stadium was geared up for mass hospitality.

I won't be going back in a hurry unless it was a big game.

I remember Oldham away early 90s and we had the smallest turn out I can remember for a league game. Also a poor turn at Bradford playing at Huddersfields ground on New Years Day late 80s. Both awful performances too. Notts Co away lost 6-1 early 80s and a 3-0 defeat at QPR around the same time.

As a dark horse game, I'm gonna say FA CUP FINAL with Liverpool in 92. Brilliant run and performances to get to the final, but a crap allocation of something daft like 18,000 tickets due smaller average home gates than LFC. Obviously we still had thousands there and it could have been different if Byrne took his chance in the first half.

Scousers near us being shitty all match but then wanting to shake hands after the whistle ofcourse. One tried to set fire to giant surfer flag we had with a lighter, whilst it was above heads. Game just flat after they went 1up and felt like a total anti climax after a great run to get there. On the way home to the North West in our mini bus, we got stuck in traffic on the M6 and took abuse from all corners. Not even on a banter level. Pathetic from Liverpool fans really.

Notts County away, the (almost) relegation game. What a bunch of Spineless Cowards. Ian Rogerson sticks out for some reason. Stayed up, but still went home feeling empty after having watched that lot cower.
Nottingham hasn’t been kind to me, was at that game and after losing 2-0 to Forest in Smiths top flight season some tw@t hit me with a metal bar breaking my eye socket and requiring several injections through my pupil. Hopefully that’s the worst away day I ever experience.

Flipping the other thread on its head, what's the worst away experience you've had.

Not in terms of result but the overall day. For me it was Everton away in 2017 under Simon Grayson in the League Cup. Travelled down by myself on a dry supporters bus, lost 3-0 and may as well not have showed up.

Everton won in first gear and there was about 400 SAFC fans down. Just an absolute waste of time from start to finish and one of those proper 'what am I doing with my life' kinda nights.
southampton 8-0

i swear to god we were the best team for an hour

If we are including cups at Wembley etc the nothing can compare to 1998. Nothing will come close. 1992 was gutting though and a non event after a great run, as you said.

Without doubt 98 was gut wrenching as was 2019 vs Charlton. For me, I was gutted after 98, but knew I'd witnessed a great football match and felt confident we were onto something good with Phillips, Quinn, Johnston, Summerbee, Clark etc. We most definitely at least turned up that day. Personally, I was more depressed after 2-1 defeat in 2019, as I sensed all wasn't right with Methven and Donald. That consigned us to more pain with a big question mark as to where we were really going. L1 longevity has been truly shocking.

I understand what you are saying. 98 was gut wrenching at the time as we did not know what was about to follow. We were incredibly unlucky that year with how good Forest and Boro were. The playoff final was the most gutted I have felt coming out of a match.

Late 80s, can't remember the exact year, West Ham on a Tuesday night. Made a last minute decision to go. Me and a pal got the overnight bus down, arrived about 6:30am iirc. Spent the day wandering around London with not much money. Got over to West Ham about half five because we didn't know exactly where it was. Very dodgy place, so we got ourselves into this pie shop and lingered as long as we could. Got in the ground at 6:30, feeling pleased with ourselves having made it. We got beat 8-1... Three different keepers on the night, including Beardsley. Hardly anyone down, but a canny few London mags. Walking back to the tube afterwards a few lads set about us. A minor scuffle before the police chased them off. Made our way back to Victoria for the night bus and we had a long hungry journey home. Nee money left, got off at Durham and walked back to Stanley. About a day and a half of mostly misery. Still, didn't stop us going again.
I was in theWest Ham end for this one with a few lads from work (hammers supporters)
Can't remember the score when we got our goal (other than we were getting hammered) and a few of the idiots wanted a bloody fight.

The shame of it was that we were the best team that season. Just had a poor start, but I think If I remember right, didn't we finish third on goal difference to Boro or was it just 1 point or something ? I went to 3-0 win at Forest on a Weds night. We totally overwhelmed them by the end of the night. They had been formidable at home.

The two that remain etched in my memory :-
1982 Watford 8 Sunderland 0
2014 Southampton 8 Sunderland 0

I missed the WHU 8 Sunderland 0 thrashing though!!! What a hat-trick that would have been, not..............

This. We were the best team when we hit our stride, but it was a long time coming. The Reading debacle and subsequent improvement didn’t come until October.

If my memory serves me correctly we would still have gone up automatically if we had won either of the two games we drew over Easter, or got a point at Ipswich in the penultimate match. It was that close.

Fuckers.

One of the best away games I did that year was that Southampton 8-0 game.
Match was dreadful mind but was a great day overall, ended up getting pissed with a load of Southampton fans pre game and wiped out 4 different shops of its drink in a small town on the way back.

Crewe

Brighton

Cardiff

Grimsby

Bury (the one just before Keane arrived)

Palace away in the playoffs... Friday night, I was just a bairn at 17.
Started off canny with good trip down and we managed to get served in a pub near the ground where the home fans were accommodating.

Got beat 3-2 in a good game, but we were at the front and caught up in the bother at the end.
Getting back to the bus there was bother everywhere, and to top it off someone asked me to open the sunroof on the bus (god knows why it had a sun roof) but I accidentally pulled the fire escape handle and the whole thing bounced off down the motorway.
What followed was a 6 hour trip with everyone freezing their tits off and fuming at me.

Got back in the early hours and had work at 7am. Lovely experience.
