World cup dark horses

Is this the year for one of the African sides to reach the final because they seem to be getting closer as the finals pass so at some point it will happen unexpectedly.

No. Don't think so. Evidence suggests they aren't getting very close at all.

1998 only Nigeria got out the groups, lost in last 16.

2002 only Senegal got out the group, went out in QF

2006 only Ghana got out the group, went out in last 16.

2010 only Ghana got out the groups lost in QF

2014 Algeria and Nigeria got out the groups, both last in last 16.

The World Cup doesn't really have upsets when it comes to winning it, or even getting to the final.
Maybe a surprise is a team unexpectedly getting to the semi finals, like Turkey and South Korea in 2002, or Croatia in 98, or Sweden and Bulgaria in 94.

Of the 17 finals since 1950, Germany or Brazil have appeared in 14 of them.

I think they'll do well. But get Brazil or Germany i think in quarters if ive worked it out right...

If one of those finishes second in their group then they meet each other in the last 16 and that gives England a 50/50 chance to avoid the winner in the QF, stranger things have happened. For e.g. Germany could beat Brazil and play Belgium in the QF while we play Sweden/Mexico/Switzerland.

Serbia.

Milinkovic-Savic is going to be the absolute boy this summer.

^you can print that off and keep it too.

Isn't this about the unexpected quarter or semi-finalists though, not about the winners? Costa Rica quarters 2014, Ghana were the hand of Dracula away from the semis in 2010.

Good stat that. 2 of the 3 without them were 2006 and 2010 too!

Incredibly they'd never met in a World Cup Finals match before 2002.
