Work experience at school

We were allocated stuff rather than organising yourself as my lad does now, and I was allocated a week on a farm.

Everybody laughed and took the piss but what a week it was, I came back with stories how I drove the tractor (at age 14), played with the farm dogs and got given weird but lovely food off the farmer’s wife.
That sounds class

Woolco in Washington Galleries. Think it was probably all they had available as I'd done nowt to sort something myself (not sure that was even a thing back in the mid 80's!). It was shite, mainly in the warehouse part where the deliveries came in. Skinny as a rake carrying 6ft snooker tables off a lorry! :) Think my mother tried to get me out of it saying it was slave labour! Stuck it out in the end and was definitely great experience. Made me very aware that I didn't want to end up doing that for a living!

Done mine at the outdoor activity center when it was at bottom of Silksworth Row Hylton Road. Spent the week Canoeing , Wall climbing and Hiking, absolute belter of a week.

i did coles cranes at school feeding punched cards into the computer and changing massive tape drives.
also had a week during college at the civic centre sat in a red hot office fannying about with spreadsheets.

Did mine at the old Les Allen Saab garage in Roker.

Went in my best Swiss Tony rig out thinking I'd be in the showroom but they sent me down to the garage below. All my gear was manky when I got home on the night.

Used to go to The Wolsey for lunch where the mechanics taught me to drink proper beer.

Got my eldest lad into the print room where I work and he hated it. Got the youngest lad into Maxim brewery and he loved it - they paid him anarl.

I did a week doing manual work at Decreete Concrete when it was based behind the Travelling Man on Newcastle Road in Boldon, was freezing cold, most of the lads were sound though and they had a whip-round for me on the friday

That sounds class and I’m 40

Kail and Co in Southwick. Despite having no interest in engineering and being absolutely f***ing miles away from where I lived. The only thing I can really remember is etching serial numbers onto some huge cogs and the taste of the orange juice from the canteen vending machine. And some bloke called Maurice who was the odd job man who used to sing everywhere he went.

My old junior school.

First day, too the boys out for PE - Football. Little lad promptly went in for a 50/50 and broke his leg. Poor thing. He didn't even cry or anything, just came up to me and said that his leg hurt a bit, so I said he should sit down and see if it got better. Can't remeber if he joined in again or not, but he stayed in school all day. Didn't see him again until my last day - full pot.

Brave lad.
