Work experience at school

I spent the week in a technical enterprise centre as that's where some of my mates wanted to go. Other than the banter, I was bored rigid learning about different tools. Wish I'd chosen something else. The problem was that I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life at that time. I had no role models to give me any inspiration and my careers advisors were rubbish.

Did mine early 90s. Photocopied and filed things for two weeks. Read about the company when there was nothing to do.

I think he would need an education health care plan which he hasn't got. I tried to get him one in primary school but then covid hit and he didn't end up getting it. His secondary school won't apply for one as he is in all the top sets in his lessons (he has high functioning autism) and he is really quiet and causes no bother. They said he wouldn't qualify which is ridiculous as he has a load of other problems, social, emotional and his communication is terrible. He has no idea how to hold a conversation, can't talk on a phone etc. My daughter who is severely disabled has had taxi's provided for her all the way through school/college but don't think my son would qualify.

If you can afford it then get an assessment done privately, I think we paid 300 quid about 5 years back.

This helped massively in getting her into a school that would deal with her educational needs.

Some of the kids get taxis to and from school all paid for once they are assessed etc.

Good luck

I was at Volvo BM, fitters for opencast vehicles, never seen so many grot mags in a bait room. Drove a fork lift and massive dump trucks, class

How did you get it done privately? I wouldn't have a clue where to start.
Pleased your daughter is sorted in a school suited for her needs. My son is fine at school, it's what happens when he leaves that I am worried about.

Done it at Sunderland Echo. Was canny shit. Wrote a paragraph on a gig that Lasgo were doing at Newcastle later that week.

Inland Revenue in Leeds. Boring as fuck but I remember feeling like a proper grown up getting a coffee and bait at lunch

I did mine at Cowies on Trimdon Street, which in turn led to an apprenticeship there as a mechanic.
That's where I done mine, must have been about 1978. Really enjoyed it doing PDI's most of the week and other bits and pieces. Around the time of the Cortina mk 4!

I wasn’t born until 79 so you were way ahead of me. Bet some of the lads were still the same.

School was a week as a car mechanic at a BMW dealership and college at SAFC Football in the Community scheme coaching

Only one I can remember for obvious reasons was a canny lad called Peter Lee, I worked with him all week and he was a good laugh.

If I remember correctly, Bobby Kerr worked in sales there round about the same time after his playing career!

There would maybe have been Shorty / Derek Short and Joe Rowlands.

Appreciate it was one week 43 years ago. 😂

Whilst most of the Connexions (Careers) service has gone, there are still some staff. You could you use the email given on the link below to express your concerns and ask for access to things like independent travel training. South Tyneside College used to have provision for young people with autism and I don't think you needed an ehcp. Good luck
