Work experience at school

Wanted to do journalism but it was too late by the time I emailed the sports desk at the echo.

I did it at Marksys in Dalton Park, 16 years ago. According to my mate who worked there for 10 years some of them are still there and have moved on to management..

I enjoyed it to be honest. Me and the lad who I was in with are still best friends now. As we were beforehand. Was a good laugh. If I could earn what I do now, stacking shelves and putting things on a rack.. I’d do it again in a heartbeat as I imagine he would.
I always wanted to do journalism, was veered away from it though. Still managed a week at the Shields Gazette.
As for school I did three days at Ryhope CofE primary. Supposed to be a week but caught glandular fever.

Never did work experience at school, I think it was 1985 or ‘86, and I was supposed to going to Woolworths, the one that used to be top of Silver Street in Durham. But week or a few days before everybody was going out on work experience, they cancelled, I think it was something to do with shop renovation, so it was too late to find another placement and I ended up having to go to school and sit in empty classes for two weeks.

Utter boredom, even my teachers just weren’t interested in giving me course work. I think they also had expected to nobody around and had nothing prepared

I did mine in Hays Travel, Seaham. I loved it! They still do it as far as I’m aware but due to covid it was stopped briefly, not sure if it has restarted or not.

A week in the hospital labs in Shields when I was in sixth form. Four departments in four days then the pathologist, who'd taken a bit of a shine to me, allowed me to sit in on some post-mortems as a treat on the Friday.

As a bairn ?

Sunderland Council Housing Dept, quite enjoyed it out and about with an officer dealing with tenants problems, few milfs in the office anarl 😁

Did two weeks shadowing an architects assistant at some place on Douro Terrace. It quickly confirmed I never wanted to do that as a career.

Always been grateful for the opportunity though. Really great of a small local business like that to provide bairns with that experience.

The fella reminded me a bit of Stephen Fry. Nice bloke. When I told him I was into music, he told me stories of seeing Bob Dylan regularly in the 60s.
He seems spot on but you were definitely getting groomed as a trainee serial killer.saying that like Stephen fry could probably groom me into a serial killer he's class.

In the lab at vaux. Can't remember what I was doing but enjoyed it.

That's where I went when I left school! Two year YTS in the brewery lab. I loved it and was devastated when they couldn't keep me on.

Heard load of good things about vaux from mates who worked there sounded like a night out ha not sure if it's true though.
@rubberface is your son in Year 10?
My son is in year 9 at the same school but with his autism he can't even leave the house on his own so there's no way he will be able to do work experience.

I done mine at Ryhope Infant School, not sure if it's still there now or if they have a new school.
Ahh mate hope the bairn gets sorted and with a lot of work from home is that even a possibility for him.

Thank you.
I honestly have no idea, I'll have to speak to the school nearer the time. I'm dreading him leaving, no idea how he'll even get to college never mind get a job. I wish I could freeze time and keep him a kid.
