Woodstock ‘99

I’m watching it now and they’re saying how nowhere else in the world organises such a thing and how hard it is to organise a 3 day festival while a bloke on a farm in Somerset does it every year
Only watched the first episode so far but the two stoner dudes are hilarious. Like a real life Beavis and butthead
Yeah the blond guy seems like he’s been high for a looooooooong time
I loved this, wild, but truly the last time on earth when life was truly fun. No cameras everywhere or phones. Bring back the smaller world, where people had to venture into their community to socialise. Events really were events. It’s all made up internet stuff nowadays.
So you’re saying the camera footage from this event didn’t happen?

When was that one out?
I remember watching a documentary on it about 20 years ago (I guess not too long after it had happened)
Couple of years ago I think.

I’d wanted to watch it for ages but wasn’t available on any platforms in the UK.

Watched it last month on a plane, was class.

My former boss was there. He was fresh out of college and left on the Saturday due to the absolute carnage he had witnessed.

I haven’t seen the documentary, but if half the stuff he says it’s true, then thousands should be prison

Yeah I was thinking that.
American kids are loud and can’t drink
The music was shit with a few exceptions
It was just a typical Capatalist money making venture.
Without any thought to people’s safety or health.

I think it was 2000 when the fence came down at Glastonbury and that was truly terrifying, around the fairly new dance area was crazy and soo dangerous.

Glastonbury got away with it that year (in terms of health and safety) but it changed all festival from then on imo.

Probably for the best but it lost a lot of the old school type vibe.

Just finished episode one. That Korn atmosphere on the first night was absolutely insane.

You can't recreate Woodstock. They couldn't do it in 1994 when it flopped.

It was a recipe for disaster. 1999 was a completely different world to 1969. Just like 1999 is completely different to 2019. The late 90's was all about attitude, being horny and being angry for no reason. That's why bands like Korn and Limp Bizkit were so popular. Films like Fight Club and American Pie were popular. Shows like Girls Gone Wild and Jerry Springer were huge.

Woodstock 99 was just about capitalism and making money of the name. They didn't real care about health and safety. Just about making a profit. The promoters knew the peace and love era was dead and it was the Generation X era.

Made me feel rough watching it wondering how they coped with the booze, drugs, dehydration and the lack of rest on top of that with the heat. Even in my peak I’d probably be back at home in bed after day one
I wondered that, even at creamfields or global gathering I was fucked after day one

Creamfields 2003 a fence for the queue got pushed down which led to a little stampede towards the entrance, good job most would have been high as a kite otherwise drunk people would have led to hell on imo

They simple can’t allow it happen again. Any doubt and they lose the licence.

Glastonbury’s super fence was on thin ice as well.

They had to get more specialist risk management teams in to ensure they would be granted the ongoing licence.

One of these companies was founded in Hereford and used to have a now famous tv star as ex director.

They looked at the whole site inner and outer cordons. Access points and passes.

They even have some mates prove a point at one stage to help “educate” the regular security and owners

Just to add a lot of what was then regulars on the build and security teams were found to be fiddling either people or substances into the site.

I did think this all the way thru - they couldnt take any drink in, everything was ridiculously expensive, how were they getting so pissed? (Noting there was also obv a lot of drugs to enhance matters in another way...)

Break Stuff was always gonna get a kick off out of it.

Especially the way Fred was building it up during the song. He basically told them to go off it. (the way he orchestrated it is captured perfectly, and in more detail on the HBO doc).

The HBO doc also captures better scenes from the Korn stint. Which was also wild.

Might have to give that HBO one a whirl this week.

Durst has always been a cock mind.

Never really took much notice of him at the time marra. Always thought he was just a bit of a spenk fronting a shite band. But, I must admit, he had that crowd in the palm of his hand and had the place going off.
Like I say, Break Stuff is just one of those songs that can elicit a reaction anyhow. And like you say, the things he was saying. He knew exactly what he was doing. Even his interview after they got off stage… precisely what he wanted.

Half way through episode 2. Enjoying it but it's about to get mingen.

Shocking infrastructure. Been to enough festivals over the years to be able to spot the ones who are taking the piss and woodstock was seriously taking the piss.

Too many spring break wankers. There's something about American culture that encourages that "woooaaahhh" bullshit.

Imagine thinking you can create an atmosphere of love and peace with pissed up frat boys in a military setting with Korn, Limp Bizkit and rage against the machine.

I didn't know who Limp Bizkit were when I first moved to Dallas in '99
But it struck me how many wannabe hardmen wore the fitted baseball cap backwards, baggy jeans and skater t-shirts, trying to look mean as fuck in the shopping malls and bowling alleys. Coming fresh from the UK, I just thought they looked f***ing ridiculous. Durst was adored back then.
