how did it manage to attract mainstream support compared to other female sports?? attracts almost as much interest as the mens which you cant say about any sport like

The standard of the women’s tennis isn’t relatively as poor as the standard of other women’s sports, like football.
This, the average female professional would comfortably beat an amateur male. Think I read once the best female football team was smashed by the Swedish U17 team in a friendly.

Maybe so, but the relative standard, ie the standard of men’s to women’s football, is much further apart.

Women’s tennis is still good tennis. I don’t think most people would say the same for women’s football.

Unlike most women's sport it wasn't held back by male dominated hierarchy running the sport.

Possibly because the men and women compete in the same venues with the events being in the same time frame.

It’s not that hard to work out.

The women's game is better to watch usually. More rallies. Mens is more often about power, serve and volley often winning the point.

Very good point.

In terms of potential, the womens' game reached its peak decades ago - now its progressing on the same path as other elite-level sports - incremental gains as technology, diet, fitness etc increase over time.

And, they fought like mad for fair treatment, and didn't expect anyone to give them handouts. Unlike some other sports that seem to get equal coverage without any merit whatsoever.

Yep, if Billie Jean and the others didn't make a stand for equality in the 70's then women's tennis would not be close to what it is today.
