WM Clubs in Sunderland area, long since gone!

Used to love a session in the club.. sometimes sitting amongst the old men ( mostly old miners) these old men could tell canny tales from years gone by.
Sadly this is all lost now on the
Younger generation

Judging by threads like this being on the committee of the local workies was akin to being a captain in the mafia ffs  While I'm sure lots had there perks I think a lot of the tales of mass skimming off the top are just a bit urban myth type stuff

I went in the Potters for a couple too. When I was a lad there was six pubs in Pennywell and South Hylton (and another three just outside the border) and at least five clubs. There's only one pub and two clubs now I think (I'm assuming the RBL has closed down the bank).
Aye I think so? I was just thinking the other day, about how many pubs are left on the south side, west of Kyle road, I could think of about three, not sure if there's even that many.

By about 20 yards, although the original Penny Well that the estate was named after was where Greenbank Drive is now.

There was a bloke sitting in the same seat in front of the bar that I first saw him sitting in in 1984. Every Sunday without fail. The only thing different was he had two new drinking companions cos the original two have passed away.
You on about Stan you

Potters, Hastings Hill. Is the Wavey still open? There used to be enough pubs in the west of the town to have a decent sized darts league in the area on Mondays.

Must be mid/late 70's now. He looked good for his age.

I think the Wavey is either shut or being renovated? I'm guessing the Dolphin is still open, don't know for sure, other than those three, It's hard to think of any others.

I was never a fan but what a cracking cultural phenomenon it was.
They were a phenomenon unique to the north east.
I was often in wmc in Hull and although similar they were totally different.
Possibly down to the committee that ran them up here being the be all and end all. In Hull the committee counted for nothing.

Looks like I’ll be back in South Hylton WMC this evening. Canny rock band on by all accounts. No idea how many will be in for it though.

Washington Welfare was part of my youth and early adult life, every pub or club I go in now I compare them to the Welfare, it was brilliant, full of characters, hard drinkers, hard men and some of the best pool and snooker players I have seen. If you were a Welfare lad you had mates for life. I actually cried when it was pulled down after the travesty it was allowed to become. ( last chance ranch )
Now it’s a old ppls home
