We used to call them "mermaids nipples" - when the Kershaws man came round the pubs and clubs.
All I am doing is explaining to the uninitiated what the Scots call winkles.
We in the North East of England refer to them as willicks, the Scots refer to them as buckies.
The Jocks also refer to crabs as "partans" - another colloquialism.
As bairns my granda used to bring a load of live crabs home, we used to play with them running around the garden before watching them being hoyed in the pot!Me Dad used to bring bags of buck whelks in when the yards were open..the smell in the kitchen when he was boiling them.
