its strange because if wellbeck does well for us, it more than likely means we won't be able to keep him, so we all want him to do well but at the same time we know its only going to be for man utds benefit in the long run, so its sort of mixed feeling when you see him doing well like last night, cos fergie will be watching too. oh well, suppose short term we get a few goals from him..

Thats win win win...... shirley

He does well and we win.

If he goes back to Man Utd then what have we really lost? Nothing as he wasn't ours to start with. If you were going to London for a weekend and your mate offered you his Ferrari (including all petrol) to get there quick and in style, would you refuse it because it wouldn't be yours when you got back and prefer to just take your Micra?

What we will have done tho is show SAF that we are a good team to loan players to, which can only work in our favour for the future for when Man Utd are looking for teams to get their stars games in.

It will also give Welbeck the option of ditching sitting on the bench for Man Utd for a few seasons to make his own name elsewhere, with us already being up there in his choices due to his time here.

I don't get how we lose? Unless him being here ends up pissing Bent or Gyan off enough to leave.

My thinking on loanees is that I always assume they're going back to their clubs ....... do well, thanks a lot, do bad, fuck 'em.

Mind its the same with your own players most of the time..they go on a good run of form and suddenly they believe the hype and want new contracts or spit their dummy out..get the new deal then go to sleep.
(watch Kenwyn at Stoke next season).

Lots of exceptions of course but football fans and football players are so short sighted that its almost pointless looking too far ahead.

If we get a great season out of him then well done for everyone...Evans went a long way to getting us out of the Championship and then keeping us up that first year...we didn't go down (just) when he didn't sign permanently.

Loaning players has a lot of advantages, not least financially, where you basically derisk a transfer. In many cases you end up in the driving seat, with options to buy, but in cases like this and Onuoha, you at least get a low-risk year out of them, an opportunity to improve our standing in the league without risking as much cash, and a chance that you can get under the player's skin and he wants to stay.

In the case of Welbeck, it is possible that he has a good season, but that SAF finds himself at the end of the season happy with the strikers he has: Rooney, Berbatov, Hernandez, Macheda, or has other youngsters coming through that are just as good. Under those circumstances, Man U may feel it is good value to let Welbeck come here for say £10m.

Alternatively, if he has helped fire us further up the league and into a position where we can ourselves attract better players, all well and good.

If he has flopped, which a couple of weeks ago we all thought likely, then all you have spent is the wages, and maybe a minimal loan fee.

Works for me.
