The fact we finished so low had nothing to do with O’Nein playing cb - we had one of the best defences on the league.I get the bloke's a wholehearted, fairly dependable CB. He played for Wycombe as a midfielder.
We had a striker, Richard Naylor, at Ipswich. Scored for us at Wembley in the play-off final in 2000, fairly dependable, wholehearted lad, never really likely to rip up trees but could do a job. And we had him playing in defence following an injury and he did OK, nothing earth-shattering, certainly not a Rio Ferdinand or a Sergio Ramos, probably not even up to Jason De Dos, but he was alright.
And he kept playing at CB and we had a season of it. And, as the season went on, his limitations became obvious until fans started commenting on why we never seemed to just purchase a Centre Back.
He was fine as long as our limits were mid-to-lower-Championship finishes. But there comes a point when you question just why we stuck with him for so long. Especially as, like all fans, you want to see the team make some kind of progress beyond fourteenth in the Championship.
