Will Grigg article in The Athletic

He does have the ability to press and engage the defence though. He did it when he first arrived and got absolutely no support from the midfield. I wouldn't expect him to hold the ball up or have an aerial ability. He's not that type of player and isn't going to have any success in doing it. It's like Barcelona playing 1 up front and launching the ball towards Messi and when he's not winning headers and chasing every lost cause down claiming he's no good. I'm not in any way comparing the two players but you can't expect players to be successful in roles that they're totally incompatible with
I disagree. He doesn't have the stamina, pace or agression to press effectively. Can't recall defenders ever being unsettled by his presence or him winning the ball back regularly. He doesn't run the channels and get crosses in. He can't dribble or play clever passes to create chances for others. As you've agreed he can't even put up a battle in aerial duals. He offers nothing if he isn't scoring. He has proved in good teams who are set up precisely for him he can score at this level. He failed at Brentford, probably because he didn't like the style there. He likes to moan and blame others instead of trying to create his own chances.

He's wrong about us wanting the type of football he suggests, and he's right that our style of football currently is completely unsuited to him.

Meh.

If you read any article by a player who was at Sunderland and praises Jack f***ing Rodwell, you know there is something wrong with the twat
Jack rodwell is his role model.
Ha'way Hank, I like you as a poster but that's a totally wrong way to look at things. Even the best strikers in the world miss chances. Overall, we have created nowhere near enough chances for Grigg.

Agree. I'd much rather we jettisoned Parkinson and appoint a manager who has assessed the squad and realised we have a proven L1 goalscorer in the squad and found a tactical shape, style and players to complement a player we have spent a record amount for the level we're at, on.
Creating chances is the responsibility of the team in 2020 and that includes the strikers. When he is talking about creativity, it's like he's looking in from the outside with no accountability. I hope the fans can be allowed in and we really make his life in the North East so unbearable that he takes a paycut and leaves.

Yet we wonder why some players find it uncomfortable playing up here..

We don't like shirkers like him or Rodwell. People that disrespect our football club and take the piss out of us. What you gonna do, clap him? Football matters to us up here. Enough about the spineless character that he has.
I noticed you have ignored the valid points I made about his deficiencies as a player.

Petty insults and comments on his ability aside that’s an incredibly ill advised interview when you’re still contracted here.

The comments about the fans are absolute bullshit. The manager everyone harks back to when it was good is gus poyet and everyone preferred it when we tried playing football under Ross at the start of the season.

Unless he’s got a move lined up already he’s signed his own death warrant there.
Not when you're angling for a move!!

Tell the overweight lazy disinterested bastard to cut his wages to a level that someone would pay and he would be f***ing gone. Poor Will my heart bleeds for the bastard on thousands a week at a club he should be grateful to be at and has achieved sweet fuck all. The piss taking party................................. erm
It is appalling when players of ability or true potential can come to a club and just please themselves about whether or not they put in any effort or otherwise disrupt the atmosphere of the team and the support for the manager and club in general. It seems to me to be a rather one-sided deal with the clubs and managers having little recourse to players who had no intention of playing, or doing the minimum whilst still receiving salaries most of us can only dream of.

Will Grigg could undoubtedly score a lot of goals in this division. However after paying what we have and then sacking Ross, not hiring a manager who would mould a team to suit him is another staggeringly poor decision by the owner.

He's definitely up there given the context (£3m in L1 is an unbelievable amount to spend)

Too much money for him but that is down to SD not will grigg, wish he had been better for us but time to move on. Unless Parkinson builds a team around him. :D:D:D:D Even Jack Ross said no it's too much money!

All said and done his signing is up there with Rodwells for waste of money quotient.
Don't be daft. Have you any idea how much we spent to get a footballer rather than a Metro Centre games addict?
Do you realise how much we spent week on week to give Rodwell access to SAFC saunas and treatment tables as well as time off on match days?
Yes, Grigg was a waste of money but as far as I know, every time he was asked to he at least ran on to the pitch and whilst there made a small attempt or two at striving to get the ball and do something useful with it. Grigg has been a waste of money but I'd rather have had him for a year than Rodwell for a week. If you are talking quotients, mine is probably a fair comparison.
