Will Grigg article in The Athletic

You can't have it both ways.

He's basically saying he's a good player and nothings changed.

Therefore when we are rejecting 500k bids he can't moan about having to stay can he.
Sounds like a bargain

I’d happily pay £500,000 for him to fuck off and talk about being the next Lewis Grabban

Somebody tell me what due diligence is done when buying a player. Do we actually investigate their character or ask about their desire to join? We’re a circus from top to bottom and even wank splats like Will Grigg are now taking the piss.

Petty insults and comments on his ability aside that’s an incredibly ill advised interview when you’re still contracted here.

The comments about the fans are absolute bullshit. The manager everyone harks back to when it was good is gus poyet and everyone preferred it when we tried playing football under Ross at the start of the season.

Unless he’s got a move lined up already he’s signed his own death warrant there.

Not iff you are trying to get the club to let you go for a small fee so he can get a signing on fee somewhere else.

Bigger picture always needs to be seen.

The guy is shite. Said it before we signed him, said it after we signed him, saying it now and I’ll say it again, he is f***ing shite.

No, of course you can’t.

You could blame him for doing these kind of interviews when under contract.

You could blame him for moving despite not wanting to.

You could blame him for his awful f***ing attitude.
Don't think he said anything particularly incendiary, but then I'm not a Sunderland fan.

You can't blame a player for moving when they don't want to. Happens plenty of times.

Haven't seen enough of him to comment on his attitude in game, just going off what your manager said about his application in training, and what he said himself (though I doubt he'd ever admit to phoning it in).
Working hard in training is a waste of time if you are not prepared to do it on the day that really counts, a Saturday afternoon.
He has that victim mentality where he likes to blame others, rather than look at himself. It is probably for that reason he defends jack Rodwell.
Creating chances is the responsibility of the team in 2020 and that includes the chances. When he is talking about creativity, it's like he's looking in from the outside with no accountability. I hope the fans can be allowed in and we really make his life in the North East so unbearable that he takes a paycut and leaves.
Suppose that's fair. But then there've been plenty of players who appear shiftless on the pitch, but score and play well in systems that play to their strengths.
That's exactly what the owner did.

But if your Wenger example had happened, the Arsenal fans would have been right to twist about the stupidity of the purchase. Doubly so if the lumbering target man refused to even try.
Twist on about the signing, for sure. But if the team isn't making many chances, or is set up for a targetman, it's a bit much to lay the blame at his feet, isn't it?
It's like you signing Joelinton and him not even breaking sweat, as well as being poor. You wouldn't be overly chuffed with the lad.
It would be. Still, his goal return is more down to the people who bought the round peg for the square hole, and the manager who hasn't worked out how to get the team playing to his strengths.

Joelinton might be shit, but we've seen him play well even in an unfamiliar role on occasion. Enough times to make me think there's at least a Premier League player in there somewhere.

I rest my case you hypocrite

Look at the chance he missed again

He's a shite striker another one in the piss taking party

The chance our midfield created for him was superb m

Bad workman always blames his tools

Ha'way Hank, I like you as a poster but that's a totally wrong way to look at things. Even the best strikers in the world miss chances. Overall, we have created nowhere near enough chances for Grigg.
Clearly off, unless we jettison Parkinson (unlikely, but fingers crossed). Dread to think the loss we’ll make on him.

I also strongly dispute the assumption that we all want a long ball team just because Quinny was a good player.

If this is what outsiders genuinely think then it probably explains Donald’s silly appointment of Parkinson.

Agree. I'd much rather we jettisoned Parkinson and appoint a manager who has assessed the squad and realised we have a proven L1 goalscorer in the squad and found a tactical shape, style and players to complement a player we have spent a record amount for the level we're at, on.

Whereas we know, whatever system Grigg will be played in, he has never wanted to be here.
Honestly, his body language is as bad as I've ever seen. He shows zero passion, nothing. If you missed an incident when he has a dig at goal, you wouldn't know if he'd scored or missed by his reaction.

The only time I saw the real Grigg was when Power slotted it through to him against Bristol Rovers.

Our lack of creativity is criminal and it's worrying after all of this time players within our club think that there is a want for Wyke like physical presence.

When Grigg first signed, I though we have might stumble upon something of a style where Power would play slightly further forward and recreate the same sort of partnership that Grigg had with Powell at Wigan.

But he isn't doing that

He clearly backs himself and is aware it hasn't worked out here for a variety of reasons. He isn't moaning about turning down bids

If we did turn down a bid of £500k he might be disappointed about not being able to move on but he wouldn't give a monkeys about the fee

In the recent interview with Methven on YouTube the interviewer suggested that Sunderland had put all their striking option eggs in one basket with Grigg on transfer deadline day in January 2019, and CM admitted that this seemed to be the case.

On STID2 you had the ridiculously amateurish sight of Donald, Hill and Fox in Donald's business office in Oxfordshire 'negotiating' for Grigg whilst Methven paced around an office in the Academy on Wearside [Donald mentions Jack Ross saying not to bid over £1.25m for Grigg as he's not worth more but still Donald still goes on bidding higher like some naive kid playing real life Football Manager].

Why weren't the owners and key staff together on that transfer deadline day working together in Sunderland? Why didn't we have more than one striking option lined up as it was pretty obvious Maja was off weeks before he left for Bordeaux [on the recent YouTube interview Methven said that he knew a Nigerian agent who knew Maja's Nigerian agent who was notorious for trying to move players on and still the owners did nothing to counteract that early warning sign].

The fact that Ross was over ruled also highlights that they just want a puppet manager if they ignored his recommendation not to sign Grigg if it was going to be a fee over £1.25m.

Amateurs who are killing SAFC.

Knowing the club and the fans I dispute this aswell, we always go back to the Quinn and Phillips era because we were good then, not because of the style. My favourite safc football was Poyet personally, along with the Welbeck, Gyan , Sess era under Bruce.

As a fanbase we do our best to propel the very worst of us to the front pages and as a result we are seen as regressive, long ball, 110% british plodders, shags who he wants, brexit, pissup, bring back allardyce, complete shit show. I don’t know why we do it to ourselves, maybe it is actually who we are. But to the rest of the world those are all points of shame and embarrassment. Yet another thing that needs to change before things ever improve.

People hark back to Quinn and Philips era because we were successful, not the style of play. A lot of people forget, although we had the traditional big man, little man striker partners, how we actually played some really good football back then. It wasn't always a case of Sorensen booting the ball up to Quinn who would flick it on for Phillips. We had some really good footballers. Bould, Craddock,Williams and Thome who could play the ball out of the back. Rae was seen as a defensive midfielder but to say he couldn't play would be doing him a disservice. Hutch, Schwarz, Reyna, McCann and Roy were good with the ball. We had good, attacking overlapping full backs in Makin, Carteron, Gray who were technically very good. Bridges was an exceptionally talented footballer. People remember Quinn as the NO.9 big man but actually he scored just as many fantasic goals as Phillips. Dichio then young Kyle were actually more suited to the target man label..

Looking back over our recent history, a lot of the most heralded have been very technical players. Sessegnon, Gyan, Welbeck, Malbranque, Zenden, Defoe, Schwarz, Arca. We much preferred even the younger lads who were coming through to be technical (Richie Ryan, Sean Thornton, George McCartney - the first time) than the blood and thunder, give 110%, get the ball and bang it forward types (Thirwell)
From day 1 he didn’t look like he wanted to be here, he’ll fuck off hopefully asap

Disagree. I actually thought he looked like he wanted to make a quick impression early on. Maybe those obvious chances early on in his time here affected him. He did try and press high up the pitch and engage the opposition defence but didn't get any support a lot of the times.

Are you hoping for Grigg to be 90s style poacher where the team is set up for him and he is expected to do nothing except try and get on the end of chances? He has no pace, energy, ability to press, no strength or hold up play, no creativity, no aerial ability, no character, unwilling to run channels. Strikers, even at league one level need to offer more to the team. The game has changed.
As for Wyke he doesn't have physical presence. He's useless.

He does have the ability to press and engage the defence though. He did it when he first arrived and got absolutely no support from the midfield. I wouldn't expect him to hold the ball up or have an aerial ability. He's not that type of player and isn't going to have any success in doing it. It's like Barcelona playing 1 up front and launching the ball towards Messi and when he's not winning headers and chasing every lost cause down claiming he's no good. I'm not in any way comparing the two players but you can't expect players to be successful in roles that they're totally incompatible with

Regarding style of play and him not being suited, to a certain extent I can see where he’s coming from, but he then suggests we just want route one.
He more or less says in that article that he didn’t want to be here.
He looks as though he’s one of those who doesn’t have any balls.

I’m one of a few of fans who have constantly wanted to give him another chance for him to come good as he has the record, once he starts scoring he will get going and we aren't playing his type of football. That interview feels like a slap in the face. He must have one of the longest contracts at the club and basically said he didn't want to come. Ive said on here a few times that people were looking into it too much when he didnt celebrate, clearly i was wrong. Granted we dont play his still of football , but there were a number of howlers which were very hard to defend.

I was always one of the first to defend Grigg and nothing has changed for me, despite this interview. You don't pay potentially up to £4m for a striker and then totally disregard how he plays. If he'd have been signed in the summer Ross was first appointed, he'd have been a roaring success, imo. I've always had this discussion with people about signing players and not using their strengths and qualities and going on to slate them when they don't work out. I'm only taking 2 from our relatively recent history. Flo was a very technical player, good with the ball in at his feet and thrived with having plenty of players getting in and around the spaces he's occupying. What do we do? We decided that he was 6 foot four so he's an ideal man to use as a target man and pump balls in to him nigh on 7 foot in the air.

Stead, people forget was a very young lad when he joined us. He was extremely highly rated and kept Blackburn up almost single handed. We paid £1.8M for him and people had this impression that he was going to come in and set the world alight. For me, he wasn't ready for that. Both McCarthy and Stead have praised each other and said they let the other down. He should have come in as the 3rd/4th striker, got the correct amount of development and game times and given time to settle in to a big club and the expectations surround it. It didn't happen.

Flo was towards the end of an very good career and Stead was at the beginning of his (relatively?) successful career.
Maja's talent was to make something from nothing. Grigg doesn't have that gift.

Maja's talent for that was exceptional. We don't see very many players like that.
Getting him off the wage bill is a huge priority this summer.

I cant see anyone buying him. Best case scenario will be loaning him out

I can't see us letting him leave on loan. If we were prepared to do that, he'd have gone to Oxford. Why would we let him go on loan with us paying the majority of his wages?
So you want Grigg as our striker next season ??

If we played the right style and formation to suit him, got plenty of bodies in and beyond him rather than just hoofing the ball aimlessly 40 yards in his direction and hoping for the best then without a doubt, yes. His stats prove that there's not many better around at this level than him.
