How long ago are we talking "back in the day"? I have drank in the Snooker Club and all the other places in Houghton for about 12 year now so may have crossed paths.

Snooker Club was good at one point when we had the football team and stuff.

Now Derek can't even have the sign spelt correctly. Haughton Snooker Club

Back in the day for me is 2000-2005, after that I stopped going out drinking, just prefer the occasional drink now.

I still laugh when I go past the snooker club and see the sign :)

Spent most of my time in the Snooker Club around then; playing for the team on the Saturday usually led in to an all day session. So no doubt I will have seen you before.

Did you make it on the wall of shame they have with all the photos in a frame?

Comes in for a bit of stick Houghton mind. Been drinking around Houghton for 12 year now. If you stay away from the Robbie Burns and the White Lion it actually isnt a bad night out.

People are right when they say the Golden has its loyal customers. The Brit isnt that bad since it was done out, in the bar area anyway. I normally drink in the rugby club but always have a venture up to the Gold and Brit.

I reckon the new Wetherspoons might kill off the burn like, very similar pubs.

(I just drove past the snooker club. Cant believe that new sign like)

The sign has been there for ages, IIRC the company that made the sign refused to correct it so it'd mean the snooker club paying for another sign.

I've lived for the last 4 years in Houghton and can't imagine why anyone would want to drink in the pubs. The only decent butchers has had to close down and even the estate agents have gone tits up (and the hardware shop). The main shops are B&M bargains, Herons, Savers, 2 bookies, Nobles "Amusements", a Greggs and a Peters. It's a f***ing shadow of what it used to be.

 Find somewhere better then.

I love Houghton. It might have it's bad points but tell me somewhere that doesn't. There's a multitude of places a hell of a lot worse to live.

£2.60 for a pint of Stella in the Brit (about £1.80 for a bottle).

I doubt Wetherspoons will beat that on price for most stuff, live entertainment on a Saturday too. I suppose a bottle of Effes or whatever at about £2.10 isn't bad though and might get a few in for that.

The Brit is a cracking little bar now. Get its fair share of ***** but most are f***ing pissed as farts and gone by 7pm

You forgot to mention Woolworths, it's when that closed down that Houghton centre became a ghost town. It's a shame the centre is so piss poor, if the local council were interested in developing the town centre it'd be packed rather than people only using Houghton as part of their bus route.

True, since it was done out its canny. I am sure people criticise it for the name its got more than what its like now. I wouldnt go in the White Lion mind.

Houghton is alright man, aye you get a few ***** in the centre but I'd rather live in Houghton than some of the towns in Sunderland or even the outskirts of Houghton.

What was so good about Woolworths? It's not like many people used it when it was open anyway.

Is that the one opposite B&M? I didn't realise it had closed (probably because the lazy git decided to close at about 4pm when most people are still at work. I wonder why he didn't sell so much?

I used it a lot as a child, IIRC Woolworths had been there since the early 20th century and a lot of locals grew up with it, a few people were sad to see it go as it was part of the history of Houghton.

Isn't the butchers across from the B&M the one where a man was found dead in the flat above and had been there a while?

Me too, I didn't use it for years though, like most people - hence they went bust.

We've gotta nice fancy looking clothes shop there now man!

Never been in the bugger like, god knas what it's like, but at least the space has been used up and it actually looks decent as supposed to being an eyesore like it coulda been. Woolies going couldn't be helped.

Trouble with Woolies was, you could get everything cheaper elsewhere, and you had more choice.

I used to pop in now and then and pick up the odd DVD or CD that might have been going cheap, but that was it. Loved it as a kid like.

Greenhows has shut ?

What about the wet fish shop, next to Woolworths ?

Sangsters went a long time ago. Woolies is now TwentyOne or something like that.

There is a new Indian restaurant opening next to the Robbies; opposite B&M. Hopefully Wetherspoons will breathe some life in to Houghton and some of the other bars will pick up.

Dominos is opening in place of Greenhow's.

I like Houghton and have drank there for 12+ years, but I also like Fencehouses, Hetton and Shiney so maybe I like drinking in shit holes. Probably like it more as other people don't like it.

Used to love going to the Buffs on a Friday for the bands then down to the white and then starting early the next day in the Brit and then crawl around the area.

It's the takeaway Bhaji expanding isn't it?? Same people who have Blue Cobra in the town apparently.

I like a drink up Houghton on a Friday. The 'Buffalos Rock' band nights are still going up at the Comrades and they're doing very well. I don't get up as much as I did the Buffs like but it's stilla good night for a band (I was even on up there meself the other week;)).

We used to drink up Hetton quite a bit as we used to watch bands in the Caroline, but when that closed we stopped going.

I don't venture in on a weekend but I've been going to the White a few times recently on a Monday night as my mate does a buskers night in there. It's quiet but it's canny. They have the football on too. If any of you like a bit of acoustic guitar playing and singing, or would like a go yourself ya should have a look down. ;)
