Why we shouldn’t care about “being good”

Imagine Leicester had said in 2014 let's just get relegated and enjoy winning some games in the championship?

For about five years Leicester were rated about the 15th biggest club in the world by FIFA or whoever it was.

Clubs like Brighton and Brentford who were always lower league clubs to me are now as big as Ajax and bigger than Celtic and Rangers because they have more money and pulling power.

There is always a chance to "do a Leicester" for a club like ours because once you're in the PL your automatically one of the biggest 35 clubs in the world and can attract any player outside a few hundred. There's always a chance of striking lucky for a few years with some well timed buys.

The good thing about SAFC is we are always interesting, we are always playing for something at the end of the season. I think it must be crap to be Preston or Stoke, who haven't done anything in years.

Spot on. I wouldn’t even mind being in league 1 tbh at least we would have a team that consistently wins games
You cant consistently win games or you would run the risk of being promoted which you seem to agree would be an awful outcome.

It is a brainless debate.
Got to aim for promotion and then try to get into Europe. (snigger)

I do hate the Premier League, though. Money has ruined it, it's just not competitive anymore. Half a dozen or so sides in a different metaphorical league to the rest.
The remainder knowing they've pretty much no chance of anything except a faint glimmer of grabbing a cup, or slogging through the season picking up the odd point here and there to scrape survival. The very weakest clubs basically preparing for relegation before the season even kicks off.

It's grim, but we have to go there and hope we can push on.
It is more competitive than ever that is why Brighton, Villa and NUFC all got into Europe and partly why Spurs and Chelsea didnt (although in the case of the later they were just totally shite as well)

Same is happening this season. In the past there was less teams fighting it out at the top, now the there is about 9! So it is not less competitive it is more competitive.
I'd argue there is every point. Most clubs are not successful. Most clubs have folk in love with those clubs. it's just how it is.
But they don't say they don't want to do the best they can.

Lots of fans here care about promotion and rightly so but am I the only one who doesn’t want to be promoted? Even if we could we’d get robbed by bloody VAR and the cheating blood money clubs wouldn’t make it a fair fight. Down here we play entertaining football and that’s what matters at the end of the day.
Ah Bisto

I want to get promoted so we can sign better quality young players and keep our current better quality players longer. Then I want us to go all out for the cups and hope we get a good draw. I don't really care about competing in the premier league, though ithink of we'd gone up last year we'd stay up this as Burnley and sheff utd are dire and Everton lost 10 points.

No wonder the owner has no ambition when we’ve got fans like this. This just makes us look so small time. May as well close the gates now ffs

Ask Sheffield United fans where they’d rather be this season. Or even Burnley for that matter.
Have you asked them like? I'm going to guess they'd rather be where they are rather than the championship.

I would argue Stoke have done as much as Sunderland recently.

I think he means that we’ve been in the play offs for 3 of the last 4 seasons (iirc) and the other was covid year. Before then we were getting relegated and prior to that fighting relegation. There tends to be jeopardy to Sunderland’s seasons

Whereas Stoke are midtable a lot apart from a relegation a few years ago

I look at teams like Brentford, Bournemouth,Luton and think surely we could give it a better go. Then you have Brighton and how rubbish Everton are. I love the way we play at the minute and for the most part it’s entertaining, but football also comes with a desire to win things and we should be no different. What I would give for an FA cup final

Whilst I suspect the OP and his mate who's liking his posts are mags on a wind up, there does seem to be some amongst our fans who think the be all and end all is "winning games" no matter what the opposition. If that is all people are bothered about, why don't they petition the club to apply for the Northern League or even the Wearside league, but also turn down any promotions we might win, then we could win games every week?

Mind, after a few years in the Northern League we might find that all our best players leave and we end up with a team of part timers, and those wins people so desperately wanted start to become a bit less routine.
Worse than circling the toilet bowl for 6 years or so in the PL like last time?
Some of Sunderland's best games in recent years happened in our last premier league spell. Why do people rewrite history?

Last time our owners lost the plot, throwing decent money down the toilet. The new owner seems much more switched on and has a plan, no matter the pro’s and cons. However, it’s just weird for anyone not wanting their club competing at the highest level.

Im a bit conflicted but at the end of the day the whole point of the club is trying to get to the best it can be.

Just think the PL is a shitshow now and completely corrupt.

I remember last season a poster on here suggesting that if we got promoted we should be able to say to the fa that we don’t want to go up because it’s more fun winning games in this league. What player worth his salt would play for a club like this, fans would disappear and we would drop down the leagues, some people haven’t thought this through
