I would guess it's because onions and so on have a similar smell to, erm , various body parts like armpits and so on. My understanding is limited but I think the bacteria that produce armpit smell act on onions too and there's a notation scale which describes smells where the two are very close. Apparently piss doesn't have a smell until it leaves you and the bacteria start chomping down on it.
