I support Stirling Albion in Scotland, and years ago, was looking for an English team to follow. Couldn't be arsed with the usual Man Utd/Liverpool/Arsenal tosh, so noticed that Sunderland's initials were actually SAFC (same as our own), and the team played in red and white (same as us).
Made my first trip to Roker Park in 1996 for a live Sky game on a Sunday at home to Chelsea. Gubbed them 3-0 (and the next day, watched the re-run and heard us singing 'dirty Paisley b*stard at Stevie Clarke :-D ). Went to a couple more games that season, Liverpool and Man U at home, and just fell in love with the club since then. We were made really welcome in and around the town, particularly in the Wheatsheaf where there was an Albion scarf behind the bar for ages!
Been down loads of times since then, and this season attended my first Tyne-Wear derby game which was great - the home one obviously!
People who glory hunt by supporting the likes of Man Utd will never understand how good it is to support a team that doesn't win every week. Just like the Albion*, you go into a game having no idea what's going to happen, and that's great.
*Other than this season, where we've been gubbed almost every week.
