Why can't I buy anti-biotics?

I always get a chest infection after a cold so I know exactly whats wrong and what I need.

It looks like I need to book an appointment with a doctor but I work away so I would end up missing out on 2 days wages if I wait for an appointment.

If you bought antibiotics every time you had a cold they would become ineffective, so in the event something was seriously wrong with you that required antibiotics as treatment you'd be fucked. There's real concerns in the medical community about the increasing resistance many diseases are developing against them. They're not a one size fits all solution, more of a wonder weapon for special circumstances.

    Exactly.

If anything, Doctors should be massively reducing the amount of prescribed antibiotics. Unless you're vulnerable, i.e. young or elderly etc. you should grin and bear it unless it's serious.

I always get chest infections and just ride it out, like. Nothing a couple of ibuprofen won't fix unless you're starting to go blue...

Colds are caused by viruses. Antibiotics don't affect viruses.

our Docs does telephone appointments which was very handy when i was working away via an online booking system. Can you not get them at your Docs?--failing that try ringing reception if you have a history of getting them a few times before as you suggest and they might get a message to Doc to prescribe?

Honestly can't understand it. I mean, if they have an underlying condition which could make such things dangerous, fair enough. But no-one in our house goes to the doctor's for owt unless they have to be carted there by someone else.

In the city I might get that but I live in a little village.

To expand on my earlier post...

The improper use of antibiotics (abx) results in antibiotic resistance.

Having them on sale would result in greater resistance.

If you have a genuine need for them your GP can write you a script that is valid for six months to get your abx dispensed.

Or he could if you did not apparently live in Canada...

I do get that, but it's so frustrating that I have to lose money and then pay for my tablets anyway. I know what I need as I've had them before

You can’t be sure every time that the infection is the same, or that it will respond to the same antibiotics in the same way.

Plus if everyone could buy them your antibiotics might not work as well in the future.

You should just ask your doctor for some extra scripts. If that’s legal in Canada.
