Why bother with cover versions…

Oh aye, I absolutely get that you can tell Ryder et al were massive fans, but I don't see the "cover version" thing between the two songs, any more than you can hear the blatant rip-off of Hot Chocolate bass lines from Paul Ryder (RIP) throughout their songs.
We can agree to disagree. It’s no big deal.

This. I've no problem with anyone having a go at a song. But I think they should "do something" with it - when you hear covers that are simply straight duplicates, to me that just seems like ripping an artist off.

Oh, and Chubby Brown covering Alice, improvement I don't know, but it's the version I prefer!
Yeah but then the hardcore fans of that band doing the ripping will probably love it.

The Wonder Stuff version of ‘if I was a fisherman’ by the Waterboys is quality as is their version of ‘that’s entertainment’. They are not meant to be ‘better’ they are just playing tracks by some of their favourite artists.

Which they should not be. If I was a fisherman is a disgrace and to cover it is a hanging offence
