Why bother with cover versions…

Oh aye, I absolutely get that you can tell Ryder et al were massive fans, but I don't see the "cover version" thing between the two songs, any more than you can hear the blatant rip-off of Hot Chocolate bass lines from Paul Ryder (RIP) throughout their songs.
I mean, I'm very sceptical that if a lawyer tried to argue that this

is a direct cover version of this

that they would have any success.

Both songs among my favourites of all time, obviously.

I’ve explained in my OP. If you can improve it go for it. Who on earth thinks they can make a song better than Jimi Hendrix ?
I can remember wonderwall by oasis and Mike Flower (?) in the charts at the same time
I don’t think is was an improvement but definitely worth doing as a bit of a novelty thing
It did well too so must have been appealing to many

As with everything. There's no right and wrong. Some are shit. Some are good. Opinions on what is good and shit differ. All part of the rich tapestry of life...

This. I've no problem with anyone having a go at a song. But I think they should "do something" with it - when you hear covers that are simply straight duplicates, to me that just seems like ripping an artist off.

Oh, and Chubby Brown covering Alice, improvement I don't know, but it's the version I prefer!

The Beatles' covers of Twist and Shout, Money and Bad Boy improve on the already marvellous originals.

Lots of awful covers of Fairytale of New York

I cannot really see any similarity other than both bands are amazing, and both songs are amazing( halleluwah slightly edging it)

Well that’s what you’d think but never happens. How many cover versions of songs do we need to hear by teen to 20 something lasses in a breathy voice making the strings of their acoustic guitar squeak as much as possible so at the end people refer to it as ’magical’

If that isn’t enough the cover in my op is baffling.
You're right on that like, I call them "I really mean it' versions. John Lewis are fond like
