Why are Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales so religious compared to England?

We were in Dublin in 95 and trawled around for ages trying to get the nod on the 3 or 4 pubs that might let you in on a Sunday afternoon.

Thankfully we had been warned about the Sunday afternoon drinking rules so made sure that once we got in somewhere we stopped there. Having a lock-in in the middle of the day was bizarre.

Corner shops were always open here. It was noticeable to us as kids that Wales was completely shut. Pubs, corner shops, everything.

Religion seems to be more of a thing in everyday life in Scotland and Northern Ireland than it does in England.

More catholics..they tend to take it a bit more seriously.

Aye, we took our children camping in Wales, about mid nineties, and Sundays were still noticeable for being far more "closed" than England.

I’ve been back since like. It’s just I have a memory that the explanation we got back then was they were very “chapel” so Sundays everything was closed.

Fair enough.

Never been there or Ireland meself like so can't really comment. I'd imagine Ireland would be for obvious reasons but can't think of any reasoning for Wales other than perhaps less densely populated areas leading to less trade on weekends etc.

I can't understand anyone getting into or obsessed by religion. All a pile of shite, Dave Allen was right "my god is better than your god". I'm all for shop & other Sunday workers getting a decent pay for their labours. It's religion that causes most bloody wars

Wasn't aware that Wales and Scotland were anymore religious than England (barring Glasgow)

Northern Ireland reminds me of the US Bible belt though. Shit loads of different churches of different denominations. My lasses mate married into some weird pentecostal type religion in NI. The wedding there was weird as fuck and full of weirdos.
Seriously glasgow not that religious in an I go to church way, the just sort of love atussle and use religion as an excuse.
I'm two miles from the border so the edges are blurred, but basically the English are more intelligent and less likely to believe in God tosh.
Cheeky
Nee one’s bothered about Wales though.
Gosh I know this is a (northern) English based board but you all a bit dismissive of your UK countrymen, I presume Gelan just being his usual cheeky self but even so a bit little englander, when the South talks about the North in such disparaging terms you all, rightly go off yer heads

Is that why they closed the pubs between 2pm-5pm on Sundays?

Probably one for another article but that Sunday trading is so out of date, nowt worse than realising at 4pm on a Sunday you’re missing something for your tea!

If you live near a Sainsburys Local or Tesco Express they’re open till 11pm on Sundays. It’s stores over a certain size that have restricted trading hours.
