plus manager?

The mooted appointment of Tottenham manager Redknapp as manager of the Great Britain football team for the London 2012 Olympics is being seen as the best way of persuading Wales to join England in providing players, such as midfielder Gareth Bale.

safc could have a few in the squad imo..

gordon, henderson, cattermole, bent, possibly bardsley, maybe turner

Yep, 18 man squads with 15 of them under 23.

On another issue, I'm assuming that we won't start the league season until after the Olympics (which finish August 12th) but not sure.

We dont usually wait for the olympics to finish, i seem to remember a couple of teams missing players at the start of the 08/09 season.

I also think I saw an interview with David Beckham saying he wanted to be one of the over 23 players.

Gordon

Onouha Wilson Jones Bale

Albrighton Henderson Beckham Bannan

Wilshere

Bent

I'm sure back in 2004 I can recall the season had kicked off over here and Italy were in the final and they certainly had a few over age players in - Pirlo being their main man.

FIFA will keep an age limit of 23 with three over-age players permitted per team for the London 2012 Olympic football tournament despite the threat of legal challenges from clubs.

The world governing body voted overwhelming to maintain the status quo even though there had been pressure from clubs to make it an under-21 tournament.

The International Olympic Committee had warned that any change could affect the number of teams allowed in the football tournament in the future, and FIFA's member associations responded by voting 89% in favour of maintaining the current age limits.

The prospect of some legal challenges ahead of London 2012 appears probable as a result - Barcelona and German sides Werder Bremen and Schalke all won a ruling against FIFA in 2008 after being forced to release their players for the Beijing Games.

That's generally been when the Olympics have started and finished quite late though - Beijing ran to August 24th and delaying the season by 2 weeks would have created a major fixture backlogue. I'm thinking that as a) there's Euro2012 in the summer b) the Olympics finish on the weekend that might normally be the first weekend of the season and c) the Olympics are in the UK, we might delay the season by a week.

what happened to the Amateur part of competing in the Olympics?

]Ignoring the fact that only England have agreed to [/B]it, I can only think of Bannan at Villa and Wilson at Liverpool who would be contenders from Scotland (and u23).

Was just thinking that myself, havent Scotland, Wales and NI refused to it so far.

Anyone any idea why, iirc it was something to do with they were worried about it being a step to a Great Britian team competing at the world cup etc. Could be wrong mind

jonny evans would definitely be in there -

hart
richards evans smalling gibbs
henderson wilshere ramsay bale
welbeck carroll

It disappeared years ago. The Eastern Block's competitors were never truly amateur for starters.
