Who puts the information on Sat Navs

I think it used to be the RAC or the AA or someone but who is it now ?

When one ways or no entrys get introduced who ensures that gets onto the various different brands of machine ?

In my old car the SatNav was called Vera. But my new car has a bloke in the satNav called Brian. I always assumed they were reading from a map.

Brian seems to occasionally want me to turn off a road for no particular reason. I assume he must know a good shop or pub down the street he wants me to go. But he retrieves his concentration when I drive straight on.

I’ve looked in the manual and it says something about the Satnav ‘learning’. So I’ve taken to quietly correcting him with a ‘No Brian. We’re not going there’ and hope he gets a bit more focused and disciplined in time.

Guess nobody knows then

I`m sure when something changes, someone in generic sat nav HQ must get told by someone to update it. I think it was the RAC who used to do this but I dont think it is now

Mines called Yvonne, she loves a farm track so I think she used to be a shepherdess before doing my navigation

There will be various different ways they're updated. The Royal Mail are responsible for maintaining addresses. They add new ones and update existing address points. I assume they will provide the information in an API or something that the sat nav companies can utilise.

On my old car-inbuilt SatNav updates were installed via an SD card. It was done for free by the dealership I bought it from.

I *think* in my brand new car it does this automatically but I’ve not read that bit in the manual yet. I’ve we not had it long.

In my old separate mounted device it was necessary to purchase an update via an internet connection and/or an SD thing. Not sure cos it’s in a box in the garage.

This in no way supersedes what I said earlier about Vera and Brian.

I don’t know where the updates come from but I presume companies pay for a satellite related service that’s operated by whatever national government agency or international service is appropriate. Never really though of it.

For a bit context, the scenario I find myself in is sat navs are telling people to use a route where i`ve got works on with TM etc so when they get where the sat nav tells them they cant go any further and theres hell on

Just wondered if there was someone I could ring to tell them to pack it in. Also when we finished the road layout will be different so it will need altering anyway. Ultimately its not my problem, I can just shrug my shoulders and sod off when they twist on but if i can sort it i will. I just dont know who to speak to.
