Never been - turns out that in a couple weeks I'll be staying at the Marriott Royal Bristol for a few days. Looks like I'll be close to the nightlife on the waterfront and other diversions in the city centre.

What say you SMB? Is Bristol a decent place to be stuck for a few days on an expense account? ;)

Bit of a run down shithole in my experience

thought in a couple of weeks you were staying in the North East and taking in the Wigan game.

Live in Bath which isn't far away at all, we go through there for a night out every now n then. Waterfront is canny, few nice restaurants along there and loads of pubs/clubs in the surrounding area, there is easily enough there to occupy you though, even if it is just eating and drinking ;)

I stayed at the other Marriott (City Centre) back end of last year, which was good, but then most Marriotts are.

Bristol city centre is cracking for nightlife. A good run is up White Ladies Road, quite a few student type places, heading up towards Clifton which is more the wine bar set. Henry Africa's Hothouse used to be worth a visit, but someone reckoned it has now closed.

Yes, same trip. My work has been extended and now I'll be in Bristol for a while as well. Get to enjoy a drive across the country-side I guess.

Rather pleased that my trip has been extended to be honest. In addition to being around for the Wigan match, I went ahead and bought a ticket last night for Fulham as well!

I'm a simple man with simple needs...good enough for me! Cheers mate.

Great to hear. I'll be there during the week so I know it won't be bustling like a weekend night - but sounds like it won't be a ghost town either. Thanks for the advice...

No worries, if you have the time to visit bath I'd recommend that too, the train station is about a 15 min walk from where your staying and the train from there to Bath is about 20 minutes. Loads of things to look at (buildings, history and that if you like such things) as well as more great pubs and restaurants, I second Wearside Wanderer's sentiment about weston-super-mare mind. Weston-super-mud people down here call it....

I know everything - what do you like doing?

Lot of links with America like John Cabot and John Wesley and some good old historical suff if you like that - would reccomend a day out in Bath also - loads to do in both cities as a tourist. If you ae really adventurous and like old/quiant stuff Wells and Cheddar are close by and Cardiff (Wales) is 30 minutes on the train.

really good night life as Flicky says, with a few different areas depending on your age/scene

Its a quite big city (bigger than Newcastle or Sunderland) and some parts are rough - but nothing like Tenderloin, Inglewood or 8 mile -definatley not a rundown shithole by any stretch of imagination- so I wouldnt worry too much as long as you stay in City Centre or Clifton.

It will pick up from Wednesday onwards

Ah - just saw you are here midweek so assume you wil be restricted to nights after work

I would imagine your colleagues would want to take you out and show you the sights - me and Flicky had our own London tour for Yanks in one company

Some musts as an American tourist:

Have drink in the Llandogger Trow - its the pub mentioned in Treasure Island and Robert LS drank in there

Go on the little tour boats on the dock in the City Centre

Go to Cabot Tower - hes the fella that found the real America and the NW passage - its at top of Park Street

Visit Wesley Chapel - he started some religion and buggered off to America (Methodism I think?)

Visit the SS Great Britain

Go to Bristol Cathedral

Have a pint of Blackthorn Cider - if you can get to the Coronation Tap in Clifton try some rough cider - you may want to try half pints:lol:

Go to clifton and walk across the suspension bridge

Go in the Fleece and Firkin - sample some strong beers - most nights have live bands

Have a pint in the White Lion Pub/Hotel next to bridge out the back so you overlook Bridge and gorge

Go to Bath and see the crescent and the Roman Baths

Most of above (except Bath) is walkable - ok maybe get a cab to Clifton, but you might enjoy a walk up Park St/Whiteladies Road/Blackboy hill and have a few beers on the way

Wow! Perfect, thanks for taking the time to list that out. I've poked around the internet a bit and recognize a few of the places. The pictures of the suspension bridge and the cathedral look amazing. And really appreciate the recommendations on places for pints...I know I can get a cold drink anywhere, but finding good places to grab pints on my travels is one of the things I treasure most (pathetic, I know). ;)

I'll actually be down there for a conference for work so unless a local is in my session, this will prove invaluable. Let me know if I can buy you a pint for your advice...i'd be happy to return the favor.

I really like Bristol, don't know it that well but have been for a couple of stays. Depending on when you go, the students will either be in or out of town. There is also the first iron ship to see.

That's ace that like, I reckon we could get a thread together where everyone does something similar for places they know well, could make a decent travelogue.

Only been 3 or 4 times but it is a cracking night out. I have A works night out there in about 3 weeks time and am looking forward to the cider boat, I will be doing Feck all the following day though!

I've never been but a police officer once got out an oxidised sidearm and emptied a round resulting in a stale methane emission being shot there!

Grew up in and around Briz. Awesome place. The Waterfront can get a bit rough with Stella-boys at weekend, but there are some canny bars around the Arnolfini. If yer into cider (not Strongbow, B*lmers and that muck, but proper cider) try The Apple - it's a bar on a boat and some decent blart gets on. Try up in Clifton if you fancy something a bit smarter. Some nice places round there and the suspension bridge looks awesome at night... take a walk across at night and enjoy the view!
