I think Rio Ferdiand was hardly ever the best CB on the pitch !!

At ManUtd Vidic and for England Sol Campbell were better and made him look good.

Absolute bullshit[DOUBLEPOST=1383926575][/DOUBLEPOST]Can remember the 2 legged champions league semi final with Barcelona were Ferdinand never put a foot wrong in both games

Even in the now much maligned golden generation the defense was never the problem with Ferdinand outstanding a lot of the time for England

Always rated Roberto Ayala. Was small for a centre half but quality!

That was gonna be my answer, probably not the GOAT, but I loved that Valencia side and he was a right hard nut.

Realistically, probably Baresi.

I love David Platt's story about Baresi. He had to play up front for whatever team he was at (Bari?) and Baresi was man marking him. It was a steaming hot day, and Platt was knacked, dead on his feet and pissing of sweat at the end. He swapped shirts with Baresi at the end of the game, and he said all it smelled of was Aramis.

By the same token I loved Cannavaro, not necessarily the best but certainly my favourite of the modern era. Amazed this is his first mention.

He's certainly up there mate, fking tremendous defender - think he stood out more because there was a lack of quality cb's in Italy when he was in his pomp.

Hansen deserves a mention tbf, best I've seen with me own eyes. One of the Argie/Italian chopper/stoppers probably the best but Hansen would be great in the modern game, likewise The Kaiser and Moore, don't think anyone read the game as well going off the footage.

Forgot Bout knob ed from motd, one if the best like tbf - fuck knows how much he'd be worth today.

Buggar off man, no not live but haway man give your head a shake. You seriously suggesting (you can't be are you??????) that Charley Hurley was better than Franz B, Bobby Moore, Baresi etc etc :D
Different type of player - Moore played in the middle of the back but wasn't the main centre half.

There have been a few views expressed about Charlie Hurley compared to Dave Watson. Hurley, of course, played much of his career in the old 2nd Division (Championship now) and he played for Eire. He was my favourite player and many a youngster like me wanted to be a defender like him.

However, Dave Watson was a striker signed from Rotherham but quickly converted to centre half if my memory serves me right. He went on to be a successful centre half for us, Man City and England. Thus, it has to be concluded in ' ... the greatest centre half the world has ever seen' Watson must be ahead of my hero Hurley. I can confirm, from seeing him play many times, he was a cut above Hurley.

IIRC Dave Watson was originally a centre-half who was moved up to centre forward at Rotherham United.

But neither should be seriously considered on this thread though!!!!!
