Whisky

Looking for some help with Whisky. Mate is 40 at the end of the month, is a scotch drinker and a few of us are chucking in to get him a bottle.

Suggestions for a bottle between £100-150 welcome.

Thanks
what sort of stuff does he like ?
Peaty/Smokey, Sherried, Bourbon matured etc etc ?

Easier to suggest if known

For the Whisky fans - Tennants Auctions Leyburn Fine Wine & Whisky - 1st September 10:30 - included is a bottle of Bowmore 18yo estimate 8 to 12 k, a bit out of my league

There's another distillery done this, can't remember which one off the top of my head, was reading about it the other week. To be fair if the owner hasn't been arsed to keep up his end with the payments then I don't think he has a leg to stand on. Wouldn't surprise me if, when they realised he wasn't paying for its upkeep, they sought it out, popped it open and it was a stunner so they bottled it themselves 🤣 Could hardly blame them tbf.

Thought had crossed my mind

Rumour has it it's happened on Islay once... But the one I read the other week was regards Worked out well for the owners
Sounds like their wasn't much in the way of proper contract for the storage.
You would be well miffed to lose £30k cask for the sake of a few hundred in storage fees.

Cadenheads have announced a new Enigma line of bottlings which they describe as:

The whiskies we bottle in our Cadenhead’s Enigma series are just that - unusual, hard to quantify, perhaps even slightly contradictory. They can be single casks, vattings of multiple casks, blends, blended malts or whatever else we can find that doesn’t fit into our existing bottling lineup but meets our only essential criteria - that they’re good.

The first two are to be released in the next outturn, a 25yo blend for £70 and a 15yo Hazelburn/16yo Kilkerran blend for £55. When Mark Watt was head of Cadenhead he had quite an experimental approach to casks, I suspect not everything he did was fully logged which has produced this line :)

I'll ask them when there is likely to be a release when I'm in the shop this week.

Had the Enigma 15yo Hazelburn/KK at the Newcastle Indy Fest today. Decent but nothing spectacular.
The 2 outstanding drams were a 23yo Longmorn from Single Cask Nation and an 18yo Tullibardene from Martin at Whisky Broker.

Good night but you just end up with “whisky blindness”
Some cracking drams…seem to recall a good Macduff ( Cadenheads?) and a nice Dramfool Bunna.
Loved the 20 year old HP but can’t remember who from.

Among the Whiskybroker samples between a mate and me nabbed a 25 year old Tomatin and 18 year old Arran 👍

You did better than me with his ‘lucky dip’ then
I did buy his 18yo Tullibardene though, decent value at £80 in today’s market.
Was all I bought though, I loved the 23yo Longmorn but £160 is a bit steep for me.
Tried to a bit more methodical this time, spent the first hour on bourbon casks, the 2nd hour on ‘finishes’ which is not usually my bag but a decent Arran from a St Emilion cask and the last hour on peated.
Your’re right though on the whisky blindness, telling that my 2 favourite drams were both tasted in the first 30 minutes.

Think you might have been sitting at the same table as me
The metal ones running along the brewery side? Lad there had 25 year Tomatin I recall.
