Whisky

Sipping the Aldi islay now, first islay I've had, it's ok, the taste is something I've not tasted in whisky, a very strong after taste. Is this peat?

I mixed 50ml whisky with 15 ml water. I've read this brings out the flavour more, could this be why I'm getting such a strong taste.

I'll try 50ml straight next

nothing to say you shouldn’t add water to 40 or 43% malt...I generally don’t.
46% I do sometimes and certainly play about with water on cask strength malts

Are there any distillery/cask combinations that tick the boxes for you folks? At the moment for me it’s Kilchoman Madeira cask and Springbank fresh port.

never mind that...how did the malt weekend go with the rather fab selection you had planned ?

no dregs going spare ?

Great night though I don’t remember going to bed. Unsurprisingly the Brora and Springer went down very well, but to be honest I don’t remember much after the 14th or 15th dram. There were 31 whiskies and 4 armagnacs on the kitchen island when I got up this morning and while I personally definitely didn’t have all of them, most of them have taken a beating.

I’ve promised samples to various mates but if there’s anything left I don’t mind sending some your way.

I popped into the Whisky Shop in York yesterday and they had a tasting session for Gulliver’s 47. One of the company owners was there and he explained how they use old Jim Beam casks to get a sweet after taste on a fairly peaty first taste. £59 a bottle and thoroughly recommended from me

Sounds a belter. 👍
Any samples would be gratefully received.
I'd willingly send some sample bottles and/or cover postage

Got 3 slabs of to work through so I'm all set for sample bottles. No bother with postage, it's only a few quid. I'm away from home all week but I'll try and sort something next weekend.

There's some decent stuff being produced by English Whisky Company. I attended a whisky event at Harvey Nichols in Leeds just before Christmas and had a try of red wine cask they hadn't yet bottled and it was outstanding. Quite like the recent North Star Spirits EWC release too.

great.
Those dram sample bottles look canny.
When gifting samples I use Ampulla glass bottles.
They're decent and fairly cheap but those from MoM look even better

Cheers, cant remember, think Haig gentleman might be.

Club man even
Had a bottle of Haig Clubman when on offer at Tesco last year. Some link with David Beckham iirc.

Not to my taste I’m afraid. A bit sickly sweet. I much prefer the Lidl malts.

Just found this link describing it

Sounds interesting. I'm not a big fan of The Whisky Shop though, I always feel like they're overpriced on just about everything.

I see Loch Fyne Whisky have got a bottle for £49 with free postage, might give it a go.

If anyone's looking for a really good value single grain whisky, forget Haig and the rest of that end of the market. Spend an extra £5-10 and go for this one from Loch Lomond

If you're happy to spend a bit more than that, I'd recommend Cameronbridge but the price does go up pretty steeply so I've only had their 'cheaper' version.

Hmm, if I order it in the next 3 hours it will arrive tomorrow 🤔

Aye, but I posted the wrong link and made an erse of it. Here's the one you want to try if it's single grain instead of malt

I managed to bugger up the quotes in my reply. ☹️ Just been editing while you were correcting 😬

Haig Club is brand over substance - it barely qualifies as whisky in my eyes. Pity it's associated with Cameronbridge. isn't bad for a cheap grain, albeit fairly basic as with most young grains.

Bang on...the mother in law has bought me the odd bottle from there for Birthdays etc when her and the wife are at the Metrocentre.
I've found how much over the odds stuff is and have said to her never buy anything from there without checking Amazon or with me.

A real rip off

tried camel camel camel ?

you basically set a price you want to notified when it drops on Amazon or there is an offer/sale.

Also handy for telling you what the lowest price it’s been and when.

Got about 60 alerts set and quite exciting when the e mail pops in saying a price alert has been triggered
