Where's our Summer?

21 st June ( or close to it) is first day of summer/ the summer solstice.
24 th of June is midsummer day.

It's a quarter day
  • Lady Day – The Feast of the Annunciation, March 25.
  • Midsummer Day – The Feast of St. John the Baptist, June 24.
  • Michaelmas – The Feast of St. Michael and All Angels, September 29.
  • Christmas Day – The Feast of the Nativity, December 25.
So by this reckoning if the first day of summer is the 21st and midsummers day is the 24th then summer lasts only seven days.

Seems about right for England.

Been a lovely sunny day today.

Forecast to be boiling all of next week also.
Highs of 23 in Sunderland.

On a technicality, 21st June is MID Summer day. Not day 1 of summer.
In ancient times we had two seasons - Summer and Winter - Summer used to go from the Vernal Equinox (towards the end of March) to the Autumnal Equinox (towards the end of September) and Winter was the other way around.

Midsummer and Midwinter festivals happened in the middle of these around the Winter Solstice (towards end of December) and Summer Solstice (towards end of June).

When we started recognising 4 seasons, Summer was split in 2 (Spring and Summer) as was Winter (into Autumn and Winter) with the solstice of each being the division.

So, despite it being called Midsummer, the Summer Solstice is actually the start of Summer and end of Spring. The solstice moves around a little but this year is at 11.07 am on 21st June.

In answer to the original question "Where's our Summer?", it is arriving on Thursday at 11:07
