Where were NUFC fans before 1992?

Yep I was in main stand. Think we won 1-0. The reverse fixture we won 1-0 through David Kelly after bracewell and Scott missed penners. Went through a right phase of missing penalties around that time.
I recorded it so I could watch it again when I got home. Never even looked at the tape, the game had been that bad. Just wiped it so I could reuse it. 6 days later we thumped Millwall

Was millwall 6 days after? I was in roker end that day for some bizarre reason. Craig Russell with 4. Think they were top at time. We humped them couple year earlier as well 6-2 I think. Deadly don got a hat trick iirc.

Genuine question. Were they people just not that interested in football before Sky and Keegan sexed it up for them, or were there loads of traitors from around the North East that defected?
I know of at least 7 bandwagon jumpers that used to go to Roker park my own relation has a Newcastle tat on his arm i am not even counting him as the only time he has been to Barcode land is to the crown court need to say i have not spoken to him in years.

What you should be asking is how is it our gates have held up so well, bearing in mind that since moving grounds, we've had two 7th place finishes in the top flight and a cup final appearance to cheer about.
No European nights and no challenging for the Premier league title.
Pretty amazing really.

Head nail the on

FACT

beefy accounts for 75% of all Newcastle's support (by weight)

Nigh on 100k through the doors between the 2 clubs every fortnight, both watching poor sides and some bellends are still going on about attendances.....

Who really gives a fuck, everywhere else in the country are looking at us, looking at our teams and attendances and either thinking "top support" or "f***ing idiots"

Me, I think both sets of support can't be knocked.......

Facts are in my signature fellas. 15 years either side of the 'watershed moment' in the uplift (our formation vs your stadium move)

f***ing 1997ers.
I know loads of lads from Shiney who turned in 92 I went to the the FA cup semi final with with two lads a year later were going to Newcastle and there were loads of lads who used to on the coach my grandad used to run who turned as well

Before my time that. I remember playing tiggy in the roker end with other Bairns when I was a kid so obviously plenty space to run around!
It still baffles me where everyone came from when SOL arrived mind.
We started seeing mams taking kids and I'm guessing as they started to feel safe. It wasn't unusual to see 4 season tickets in 1 household where as there would normally only be 2.

Yeah thats certainly true however I don't think it can account for the entire upsurge. Must've been quite a few who just didn't fancy slumming it at roker as well.

My cousin who didn't show any interest in football beyond asking what the score was on Saturday
( didn't watch the 92 final) suddenly had a season ticket. Turned into Alan Hansen overnight, tactics, formations the lot.

Bit of a crush this day I'd imagine:

The 1901 Good Friday encounter, late in the 1900–01 season at St James' Park had to be abandoned as up to 120,000 fans made their way into a ground which then had a capacity of 30,000. The news was met with anger, and rioting followed, with a number of fans injured. However, in general, although the derby attracted big crowds – with fans often climbing trees and buildings for views of the game – there is little evidence to suggest any animosity between the two sets of supporters in the pre-war and immediate post-war period

Loads will have been like that and it is what it is, I have no real problem with it I just find it ridiculous this whole 92er shite when we were guilty of the same upsurge if not more due to the new stadium. Whatever attracts more through the turnstiles can only be a good thing really.

Best support to success ratio in the country - by an absolute country mile.

If this thread originated to take the piss of the skunks attendances it's embarrassing. Just take a look at some of ours pre 92 the majority I've witnessed from 67. Just move on

Both North East clubs have had comparatively decent crowds through the decades. I think in our Third Division season our average was around 17,000, which was better than half the teams in the First Division at the time.

One of things that attracted the defensive colossus Paul Hardyman to the club was him looking through our attendances in the mid 80's when his agent told him of Sunderland's interest towards the end of 88-89 (ironically when our crowds slumped for a few months). He told me that himself on the train after a friendly at Crewe. Who says I haven't lived?

Football fans in the 80's were demonised in the media and by politicians and police in a way completely unknown to those who started going when football became a trendy money spinner. Hooliganism was rife but more often than not it was the innocent bystander supporter who was either clouted, ejected, or arrested. People simply stopped going to football up and down Britain.

That day was grim. Goodman scores a header at the Fulwell iirc.

The Lee Howey hat trick was against Preston in the league cup.
You'll know the answer. Tell me why I think I have been in an 8000 crowd for a league game.fairly certain Atkinson was playing for a clue to era. also think it was against Plymouth.
