Where were NUFC fans before 1992?

Yes we could sell out Roker Park that's a daft thing to say. You've also got to think large parts of the ground were standing only. Many women and kids wouldn't fancy standing all game.

Can the same 'excuse' be used for us then?

Can't talk for Sunderland as I grew up in Newcastle, but the number of folk who had zero interest in football before Hall/Keegan who suddenly became season ticket/platinum card members was unbelievable. And once you have that interest you never totally lose it.

No it's pointing out the facts. The perceived pop comes from people wanting to bury heads in sand and conveniently forget that we ourselves have had relatively poor gates on the past.

actually i don't care about the gates and you will not find a mention of gates (except Eric) in any of my posts, it is the actual dig wherever possible at the club that irks me and others on here..

It should make it a bit more likely though.

No SAFC changed colours round our way but loads who I knew , played football with etc changed their allegience from Liverpool/ Man U/ Leeds to suddenly become mags. When challenged it was I ve always been a n--c----e fan. Were they shite. Bad enough glory hunting with Liverpool etc but to change your team is unforgiveable. SAFC chaging to mags would never get the time of day from me, mind the other ones don t get much. I love asking them if they support Man City yet.

My brother was one of the ones who changed allegiance from Leeds to Newcastle and is now a season ticket holder. Imagine what it was like in our house in 1973!

But huge numbers of people suddenly became Sunderland supporters during the 73 cup run. I wonder who they supported prior to that? And how many went back to Newcastle during their cup run in 74?

Back on topic, I attended many games at St James during the early seventies in the Joe Harvey/Malcolm MacDonald era and they seemed to have pretty good gates during that time. And before people start whinging, I was working there to make money, though it probably cost more in bus fare than I made on selling tickets but whatever!

what a shit ground they had - LE was small compared to the FE as was the GE to the RE.

and as good sports then as they are now:rolleyes:

To be honest, I would take both the old grounds over the new ones any day. Unless you've stood on the terraces then you don't know what football is about. New stadia simply don't have the atmosphere of the old grounds.

Pitch invasions were common during that era, it meant nothing.

The 4-1 or 4-0? Class game.
Martin f***ing gray!

It's hard to say as it was cash turnstiles and the club used to pocket loads to save on tax.

We used to laugh at some of the gates they announced.
They where regularly about 3000 under what was there. Always stood or sat in clockstand.it was never much less room in there when they announced 12k or 18k.it was only noticeable when fully packed 21-22k.

try telling that to players of Notts Forest that day and the Forest fans in the GE:rolleyes:

when did SAFC ever invade the pitch during a game and stop it - plenty of times after game over like York and Blackpool

Ok I'll rephrase it. We didn't sell out in the last season for several games and pointed out in another post that it was probably down to kids etc being more interested with the new stadium.

How about away fans? It was rare to see a following of 1k at Roker. Now it's the norm.

No you had more seats ;)

Did he score? I can't remember now. The only thing I really remember is their fans kicking off and trying to invade the pitch.
