The requirement that non-EU immigrants speak English was introduced by Labour, certainly for Tier 2 immigrants under the Points Based System. Under PBS, non-EU migrants except in Tier 1 must have a sponsor. The tiers are:

Tier 1 - for highly skilled workers, such as scientists and entrepreneurs
Tier 2 - for skilled workers with a job offer, such as teachers and nurses
Tier 3 - (currently suspended) for low-skilled workers filling specific temporary labour shortages, such as construction workers for a particular project
Tier 4 - for students
Tier 5 - for temporary workers, such as musicians coming to play in a concert, and participants in the youth mobility scheme.

This system was introduced about 3 years ago IIRC was based on the highly-regarded Australian system.

And should have been introduced much, much sooner.

Indeed. A lot of people where I work are very worried about this.

Add to that the closures of pharma companies and the cuts in the science budget and it's no surprise that whole research groups are relocating abroad, and young researchers are settling elsewhere or leaving science completely.

It's an absolute clusterfuck and as usual they're far too shortsighted to give a shite about the long term consequences for the economy and our reputation on the world stage.

Well my family live out there so I've got first hand experience of this, and yes it's easy if you've got a job lined up, but that's not easy. The employer has to prove that he couldn't possibly hire a Kiwi to do the job before he can hire a foreigner who doesn't yet have a visa

My friend works out there and was sponsored by their prospective employer for a visa, they're applying for residency next year. She didn't seem to have an issue once her job was offered. She works for a church though, not sure if that or an ngo is different?

I'd love to end up there one day, amazing place

PBS and what the Government are now proposing, especially in terms of education are deeply flawed systems that haven't been operationally dysfunctional since they were put in place on April 1, 2009. This should have given us all a clue!

Foreign students generate a huge amount of export income; yet the Government, who have cut education budgets, now want to strangle the universities best source of income.

sorry i meant where abouts are you based, london or ?
Scotland

I've only ever done little bits of work around Tier 2 and it seems to me that works OK, but would appreciate your views.

Mind our reputation on the world stage has been dire since Suez in regards to this sort of thing. It had a spike with Thatcherism and then New Labour but things seem to be settling back into a more familiarly shit trend in regards to education, science, the arts and entrepreneurial ventures without frequent injections from a powerful economic sector.

The economy is fucked.
If anyone can explain to me how immigrants are responsible for that please do. I would put more blame at the doors of politicians and capitalism.

Having lived in Edinburgh for seven years I have to say that Scotland seems to get alot of the more modern political challenges. I'm impressed with quite a few of their programs and policies.

It really is, I'm lucky enough to have parents and sisters out there so if I ever want to go I'll have no bother getting in.

My step-dad was sponsored through his as well because the NZAF didn't have enough people with the skills he had so they could prove that there weren't enough kiwis to fill all the positions and give him a job. I'm not sure how it would work with a church like. What I do know is that while they're immigration policy is excellent, the people who implement are not  Trying to get a student working Visa last year was a nightmare

In the round, yeah actually, it is. If you look at what goes on in a lot of other countries of the world you'd realise how lucky you are to live here.

New-Labour want shooting with shit the reckless bastards. They had no right to flood the country with immigrants - no one voted for that.

Even Labour politicians are now admitting they messed up. Their little multicultural experiment has turned into a ticking time bomb for alot of communities.

People were warned about the negatives of mass immigration but decided to bury their head in the sand or acuse people of racism.

Well done.

This absolutely as well. I'll complain about a few things but not too much. Immigrants or not we're still among the luckiest people alive on this planet, and that includes everyone who's just lost their job.

Go somewhere else then, if you're so miserable

As I've already posted, that's an over-simplistic analysis of Labour's record on immigration. They did some things well (PBS) and some things not so well (Polish immigration).
