What size and what make ....

Of cricket bat should I get me 10 year old grandson . He's about 4'- 8" and of a stocky build . As I've mentioned on here before I had a dreadful childhood cursed with poverty but I don't have to apply any financial restraints . I just want him to have the best and not have other cheeky little twats laughing at him .

I think I had a 4 at that age.

I'm only 5ft 8(I'm 28) now so was probably that height then.

Guess some other posters will be more help having had bairns more recently than when I was one.

Don't get a bat that's too big for him to 'grow in to'.

Preferably the correct size, but smaller and lighter are better for young players

Given his height, could you recommend the size he would need ? Maybe i have to take him to a sports shop . Can anybody recommend a one ? We live in a very rural area with very few shops.

I bought the bairn a Gun and Moore laser from Decathlon, oiled it and everything, but they just use plastic bsts and rubber balls at that age, so it was a waste of money. I would just get him a cheap Slazenger kids bat from Fat Mike's, they're nice and light while being a bit more substantial and nicer to use than the plastic bats.

Size 3 or 4

The top of the handle should roughly be level with his groin.
Probably around a 4, but don’t spend too much as hell outgrow it before he gets full use out of it

The best bit of advice I can give is to get him to pick up the bat with his left hand at the top of the handle(assuming he is right handed). If he can’t play a cricket shot then it’s too heavy for him.
I’d always recommend buying a bat in person as each bat picks up differently.

Good luck

Thanks mate . My daughter took him to Spennymoor CC last night and was going to get advice from one of the blokes who trains the kids . I'm looking forward to re kindling my interest in cricket, specially the social side .

Enjoy it mate , nowt like watching your bairns play . I've had the best part of 25 seasons doing it .
Sounds like a 4 will be right and if it's true what @smoker says about only hitting soft balls then a good English willow bat is a waste of money, Kashmiri will do ( and they are lighter ).
Once he starts hard ball I would get him something decent that fly's off the middle , mine have always had top of the range bats ( Salix, Newbury, M&H and even the smaller sizes have had some power to them. Expensive business now like but worth it, a new cricket bat is the best gift you can get a lad

There’s a couple of shops out Durham way. Lorimers in bishop auckland and newlands sports in Langley moor. I’m sure one of those can sort you out and get a few bats for him to
pick up.
