Wetherspoons selling off real ales at 99p/pint ahead of lockdown

Tim Martin has complained that he can't get enough staff for his pubs and wanted more EU migration to help. That particular problem of his is a direct consequence of Brexit.
He literally said he had no recruitment issues.
The issues pubs are facing is due to inflation and cost of living crisis. Not the inability to get cheap foreign staff

I visited two independent excellent pubs in Westhoughton last Thursday evening. I chuckled as I walked past 'Spoons thinking about how Tim Martin's stupid actions have cost him millions.
It made the pints I enjoyed taste all the better.

Cheers!
Minging that.

(Blaming Tim Martin for Covid and war in Ukraine aswell - literally lost the plot)

Have these people always been so vile or is it just post referendum?

That's been going on for years though, it's nothing new. If anything people are out earlier now than they used to be hence the number of nightclubs shutting down.

The bigger problem is people just don't drink as much anymore full stop and Covid no doubt hasn't helped. I rarely go out nowadays, late 20's and nor do most people I know. If we do we'd rather go have food or go to a gig or something. The idea of just sitting in a pub just isn't appealing, we can text and talk on a group chat 24/7 instead and save money.

Not being brutal here, one of the biggest problems with the likes of Wetherspoon's are it's customers are dying and not being replaced. Same with social clubs.
Fuck me, that’s a sad way to look at things.

Bahahahahaaa
He's brought a lot of this on himself with the rhetoric he forced upon his punters, for years.
I used to go in Spoons but after the way he conducted himself, from before Brexit and during the pandemic, he can get fucked if he's having another quid from me.

You should support local pubs, rather chain ones like his lot. Local places don't have investors and shareholders.
Look after your local instead.

That's a bit depressing mind, I have to say.
Why don't you go round to each others and take some cans at least.

Exhibit A

Remoaners having a good laugh at it as well :( shame on them.

Their hate for white blokes wearing polo shirts trumps all.

I quite like Spoons. The one that opened up where my family live has really helped the town. Base pub for almost all nights out.

Don’t like the bloke who owns it. IMO he tries to exert undue political influence over patrons.

I’m not much older than @Zimba and my best mates enjoy little more than just sitting talking our way through pints and bottles and shots and then ffs someone got a cocktail jug…great way to spend a night.

Doesn’t happen all too often mind. Split about the country plus wives and kids…

I meet some friends in the Mile Castle in Newcastle.

We all have to travel to meet up and the best compromise for us all is Newcastle and the Mile is close to the station. It’s easy to get everyone seated, easy getting food and drinks and it just works.

I’m really not bothered about who owns it or his politics, I just want to have a few beers and meet my mates.
Is the correct answer, anywhere serves a purpose, depends on your budget & what you fancy!

Just different generations really. Not saying we never go out but we couldn't do it weekly like older generations used to do. It's why there's loads of random stuff coming out now basically for us, the likes of axe throwing, boutique bowling alleys, mini golf, arcades, simulation shooting, bongo bingo, modern golf ranges, escape rooms etc. All much more fun imo and not much more when pints are close to £5 each unless you drink crap.

No doubt loads would say why the fuck would you want to throw an axe on a night out on here though.

Hard to find many locals nowadays that aren't ran by one of the large breweries/pub companies, mind. Only really the social clubs and micro bars.

Have to say I am 38 and my mates want to go to an escape room as part of a night out next week and I think I'm just going to wait for them in the pub while they do that.

You should visit Westhoughton. We seem to get a new bar every other month!

We went Axe Throwing the other week. That was canny. I won... which was nice
If I avoided every pub where I disagreed with the owner's politics I would go thirsty.

The point is though, that you don't know the owner's politics.
He plastered his EVERYWHERE.

Had a breakfast in spoons in Darlo this morning , with coffe not beer mind . 10.00am too earlier for my palette. Maybe it’s cos am old but , even though I know the ingredients are cheap , at £5.25 inc coffee it went down great. Love Spoons me. At 10.00am it was busy with blokes like myself ( retired not pissheads ) happily having a pint cos it’s affordable.

Where else would you get a coffee (unlimited) for £1.25?? Good value. Don't care about some owners politics at that price, probably half the countries shops wouldn't be frequented if that was all we gave a shit about!
