Well done to the BBC

There is no option 2.

Would you prefer us to grease the wheels like russia?

To show as many people how corrupt fifa are?

Good plan.

Mate are you being serious? Remind us why Mr triesman hates the media.

See that is the difference, and it is crucial, between actively participating in corruption, and just ignoring it.

All the BBC had to do was shut the fuck up. Not grease the wheels, just shut the fuck up.

no greasing of the wheels required. Option 2 therefore does exist.

So you're back to "all it takes is for good men to stay silent".

For evil to prevail and all that......

Well yeah... like i said before on this thread. We are not talking about evil here, we are talkin about a world cup bid.

THat quote puts the journalists in the role of "good men"...... you really believe them to be good, public serving bunch, with 100% pure motives? i don't.

And most importantly of all....... the so-called "evil" has prevailed surely?

So whilst i agree with the sentiment of the quote, if it is applicable here, it only goes to show that the BBC either should have shut up, or chosen to act in a different, more effectual way.

You don't think corruption [175 bribes paid by ISL, totalling about $100 million] is an 'evil'?

The BBC were doing their job but the timing was pathetic. If they wanted to air the programme they should have been savvy enough to do it after the bid, not before.

Naive in the extreme to do this 48 hours or so before the vote and not expect it to be a factor.

except it wasn't a factor. we got one vote other than our own. one. less than 5% of the total votes cast (our excluded) went to us. we didn't lose by one or two votes we got two votes (one of them us). ludicrous to assume 20 voters were swayed by a tv programme 48 hours before the vote - considering there had been nigh on two years of canvassing prior to this week - unless you also assume all the voting members (one excluded) are also corrupt? In which case of course, in a delicious irony, the BBC were absolutely spot on to highlight said corruption.

Someone's missing the point. What the press said didn't make an iota of difference - we were NEVER going to get it - that decision was made quite some time ago.

We're not talking about 20 - we're talking about 6 ot 7. Also it evident that it was a factor.

you dont have the best bid, as confirmed by FIFA, and then come bottom with two votes because everyone votes altruistically, you get that sort of result because everyone has turned their backs on you.

Of course it made a difference. You are seriouly telling me that weeks ago England was only ever going to get two votes? No chance. People will have opted out after Monday.

Yep - that about sums up what I'm saying.

Whoever made the decision to air before the vote should resign.

That said, imo, we would not have won anyway. The millions spent by each Country on preparing a bid is a complete waste.

FIFA spend approx. half an hour simply looking at a map of the World and decide which is the best option of the places YET to host the event. FACT.

No it's not. You're saying it because you WANT it to be true. You have no firm evidence whatsoever. The rest is your opinion - doesn't mean it's right though.

Neitehr you nor I know if your highlighted bit is true or not. Perhaps the developing countries are more susceptible to well, you know.....;)

They timed the broadcast for the maximum viewers possible. Even the government asked them to reschedule the timing as it would damage the bid, but they wanted the maximum viewers possible.

The bbc timed the broadcast for their own ends only.

The evidence they got only came up in the last month. The programme was only ready to run this week. It couldn't have been shown any earlier. If you're a journalist and you've got a story then you run with it at the time that it's most salient. Suppressing the story until after the vote would have contravened one of the few noble journalistic principles.

Anyway, if outing corrupt people as corrupt affected the vote then whose fault is that? If Blatter is reminding people about "recent media coverage" then what are FIFA saying? "Tell the truth about us and you're in the shit"? If not rocking the boat because they'll fuck you over is fine, then surely the sensible course of action in future would be to stop wasting money pretending it's a decision based on merit and bung all the delegates a few million quid each?

why would I WANT  it to be true? I have no beef with the BBC.

In my opinion it was a factor - youre right there though - it is my OPINION

Also, I don't get this horseshit people are coming out with about "developing countries". Neither Russia nor Qatar are "developing countries" (er, well, Russia maybe, but any impact of the World Cup, probably negative anyway, is a drop in the ocean as a proportion of their entire output). Qatar have got the second highest PPPed GDP/capita in the world, for fuck's sake

The World Cup will do nothing to develop Russia or Qatar's economies and it was never intended to.

BBC proven correct, imo.

Fifa are so arrogant about their corruption they are almost saying - "you know we are on the take, we know it, everyone knows it but if anyone dares to say it we will crock your bid"

Anyway from what I can see they might as well only have 1 vote and that's Blatters because it always goes where he wants it to go.

Not true. He wanted South Africa to get it in 2006 and was mortified when they didnt, thats why he invnted this notional rotation policy to gurantee them it, then scrapped it once they got it.

The Germans knew how to play the game - as usual.

Ok - he gets his way in the end then ;)
