Obviousily with the England call up and his talent there is a lot of talk about JH leaving, talk on here and rumours in papers. Lets not be bullied into selling to so called 'top 4'. At this moment in time the gap between mid table teams and the top 4 has never been closer. They aren't improving but we are. Look at Spurs' rise to Champions League football from almost relegation when Arry took over. We are in a position to build a team around players like Henderson, Gyan, Bent, Gordon. The lad signed a 5 year deal, it is very important we progress in those years and show him that this is the place to be. I genuinely believe we are 2 or 3 signings and possibly a season away from Europe. Like I say, Chelsea arent improving, ManUtd arent improving, Arsenal are as they were, Spurs are getting better and City could do achieve alot but it isnt clicking right now. Teams like us, Villa, Everton etc shouldnt be bullied into selling, lets not be a feeder club. Jordan Henderson can be a Sunderland legend, future captain, England star all at the same time. I BELIEVE!

OP - You're right on this one..

The lad is not the finished artictle - good he's going to get better...

He has the oppourtunity to be a legend in the town and still move on to a big club if he makes it, if not then at least he wasn't subjected to bench warming for Citeh or the like..

Great teams often have a player who is a local, someone who will dig just that little deeper when push comes to shove..

He's a rare player that bonds teams together

I've toiled over this one for a while now and I did think that if we were offered silly money i.e £25m+ maybe Welbeck or Onuoha (although Onuoha might become availablle at the end of the season anyway) then maybe we should go but sod it.. we might never get that monay again but the local thing is priceless.. we've got to hold onto the lad no matter what it takes..

The bonus of holding on will show a statement of intent too.. I genuinely believe that he has the ability to be what Gerrard, Scholes or Lampard are for their teams..

JH MUST STAY!!

Exactly. How can you replace a local talented lad? Why sign lesser players with 25m when we can just build on what we have with him. If we kept him, that intent will attract players more than a 25m kitty.

Got to bear in mind that its £25m minus whatever it takes to buy a replacement.. that leaves us with a fair bit of money but - is it really worth it?

but maybe he might fancy a go at Manchester United.
His boyhood hero is Ryan Giggs, one of his best friends is a Manchester United supporter, he knows Fergie asked to keep informed
We all like to emulate our boyhood heroes....
If a player wants to try something it is very difficult nowadays for a club to stand in his way, they can only try and extract as much cash as possible.
Hopefully this is not the case, and a lot may change by the end of the season...

Everton kept hold of Rodwell, who progressed at the same pace & with lots of similar interest from the big boys. Hopefully we'll do the same. I think a lot is being made of his England call up to be fair, he still has a lot to learn. He has a good head on his shoulders and hopefully he'll realise his potential playing games for us, rather than warming some bench south of Sunderland.

The Boy will grow up & want to try something different....2-3 years and he will be a Man Utd player...I am just looking at what Anton did at West Ham. It is tough to keep a player though his whole career at one club thou if we are top of the league why go!!!!!! .....I see Adam Johnson wants to come back to the north-east.....Wishes he went to Sunderland.....

Here, here.

My view exactly. I think he is a future england captain. Cattermole a future vice captain?

Keep our best players. Success is worth more than money. We arent in massive debt like Man utd or Chelsea. They will slip away gradually. We can take over if we believe in it.

sunderland are a massive club, a sleeping giant thats stirring. We're too proud and strong to be a feeder club. Fuck that.

Who says hes going anywhere ? (apart from this forum like who have already decided who we're canna buy)

Get a grip man

18 months ago I remember the exact same subject title posted on a Coventry City messageboard (right down to the use of the word *must* in capitals!)

Make of that what you will!

For me even though henderson is a good player, 25 million is a huge amount for him. You have got to look at whether hendersons final product. At the end of the season see how many goals he has and assists etc. If its 25 million worth then keep him..

We must try to keep Henderson. If we can't though, it is not the end of the world. Given the way that Brue has spent money so far, am sure that he could find an adequate replaement - and probably for far less than £25 million!

Spot on..hopefully Niall and Ellis see this too even if Bruce seems to be inviting bids....

Bruce isn't inviting bids imho, he's playing the game perfectly. The 25 million tag is hopefully enough to put the big boys off, but if push comes to shove he's worked out it's enough money for him to significantly improve the team as a whole if Henderson decides he wants out or a club's daft enough to pay it. Nothing wrong with what he's saying.

Henderson is playing well and has the potential to be a top player but only a few weeks ago he was under-performing like a few others in our side. A win against Chelsea and a England call-up and he's the next Pele. Nee half-measures on here like.
