Most 'neutrals' only recognise players from Chelsea, Man City, Spurs etc ..... no one ever mentioned Pickford until he got his big move.

I have to disagree. I was critical of Henderson at times in his younger days at Sunderland (unsurprisingly you might say  ) but he clearly had talent that had been noticed by neutrals and therefore had been linked with moves. Even before Pickford was at Everton, pundits had started to take notice (Bournemouth away I think was probably the turning point). Will Hughes was talked about a lot while he was at Derby. Tom Huddlestone as a young player. Michael Dawson as a young player. Jermaine Jenas. Oxlade-Chamberlain.

In fact I think there have been loads of examples of non-glamour club under 21 players being talked up by neutrals and pundits. Watmore wasnt one of them. He didnt let himself down in the England U21s but he never stood out as being one of the best players or prospects

Outstanding is way, way OTT. I dont think any player was outstanding tonight.

Ruitter made an outstanding save. I think Oviedo looked like the most talented footballer on the park by an absolute country mile without actually producing an outstanding performance.
The match thread may have warped my mind a bit but aye overall a great appearance from Watmore.

Yet it's obvious some actually want him to fail

If he is fit, I think he will make a major contribution in this league, will help us to promotion and should rightly get some of the plaudits if he does. If anyone is arguing he isnt good enough for league 1 then I think they'd be showing an unnatural dislike or agenda against him.

I just dont think he will ever be a good top flight player.

Fair enough mate, we obviously remember things differently .....

He did in the u21s, he was first choice every game. If he had not been injured under moyes, he would likely been transferred to a prem team at the end of that season

The ones you name are way before watmores time in the u21s

Thought he did

Watmore was the main player he picked back then

I don’t see how anybody could not wish the lad nowt but good in the coming months

The article the poster linked Watmore was on the bench. So he clearly wasnt the main player he picked.

He wasnt even first choice in the game in the article people are directing me to.

I didnt say those players were at the same time as Watmore. It was in response to a point that said neutrals only take notice of top club players at under 21 level. I dont think thats true so gave those players as examples.

If Watmore continued as he was, who knows, he may have been in demand. He's been out for 2 years.

I’m giving him a bit of slack and wait to see.

The main point in that article that stands out for me, he can make things happen in an instant. Alright he maybe awkward at times but at the end of the day, he's a threat to the opposition.
