Don't be late for your train - cos they're not! And deffo have at least one journey on a shinkansen.
Might not be the case in the more touristy areas but there were restaurants that I went to where we had to remove our shoes - so wear decent socks.
Rail passes are a good idea if you are travelling about the country and another shout here for a WiFi box.
