I'm in Vietnam now. Crazy place. Done Hanoi, in Hoi An for couple of nights then Saigon this Friday.
Traffic is mental but this place is incredible

Absolute mayhem. Real assault on the senses. Hot and humid at the moment but brilliant. Did the tourist route of war museums, grim but interesting. Also did a Vietnamese cookery course for a day. Included tour of the market. Carved up fish sitting on wooden trays in 30c heat.
    Tasted bloody lovely though.
Lots of hoorah Henry types on their gap yar but they can be avoided.
For honeymoon get out of the city and do Ha Long Bay.

Loved Hoi An. Really chilled out place, Hanoi has a great nightlife, I went to a club called Apocalypse Now for NYE!

A trip to Sapa from Hanoi is good.

Was watching Jack Whitehall's new travel thing last nigth and he was there... looked canny. He then went to this place that looked absolutely mental:

Not sure if it was next to Hoi An, but was like a Fench village theme park

Da Nang is fucking grim. Best thing about it is access to Hoi An.

It is visually stunning in places but in typical Vietnamese style the water is full of litter and oil from all the boats. It's a country of contrast for me, beauty despoiled by its inhabitants - for the most part.

The train and subsequent bus journey to Sapa is brutal, like. I had to take Valium to drift off and woke up totally unrested. The views on the bus from the station are special, though.

  10. Da Nang has gotten a little bit better these days, although I do see it as the gateway to Hoi An.

We arrived there. It had a serious impact on our opinion of Vietnam, I think. The best bit for us was walking a few miles to a beach for 'locals'. Other than that, there's just not much there.

  12. Thats close to when they moved, the old apocalypse now bar had the huey dj spot and America helmets as lights over the pool tables. Had some fantastic nights in there in the early days.

Aye, if your first landing point, not the best example of Vietnam.

The worst thing I saw there was in Sapa, though. Young kid, 3 or 4 years old?, with a baby strapped to her back in the local Hmong attire. Wobbling all over, obviously not well, and parents nowhere in sight. Tourists stooping to have their photographs taken with her. I was disgusted. Me and an Italian lass tried to help her but she was just out of it. A really disturbing experience that lingers for me.

  14. Apart from the not well bit, kind of normal in rural areas, kids looking after babies, parents probably working the fields. I’ve seen all sorts there, worked well off the beaten track, nothing surprises me.

Think the parents were off trying to sell handwoven bags and bracelets in the town - the kid had a handful herself. Different world over there with poverty and that. Quite sad.

  16. Aye, not just Vietnam, ive seen same in Indonesia and Philippines, Laos Cambodia. Actually Vietnam is just above a few of those other places.

Cambodia is my favourite place to have visited. By my word some of the stuff you see there :(

Just been to Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Both incredible places. Mixed with some extreme poverty

Just finished watching all 10 eps. Had something in me eye there during the last one. Powerful stuff.

I was offshore Phnom Penh as it was falling to the Khmer Rouge. I will never forget watching the artillery barrage at night. 1975.
