When the shipyatds and pits closed many of the shop stewardd union types conveniently became councillors and virtually took over the Labour council. If the council leader didnt have a shioyatd backgroind he had a shipyatd background. in the 80s 90s and 00s. Complete amateurs joined in tje council cabinet by similiar typrs like a brotjerhood along with family connections.Once we had professional people like solicitors running the council then for the last 25/30 years the damage has been done by numerous union shop steward pit/ shioyarders completely out of their depth who have been guilty of mismanagement and comfortable unfortinately in the knowledge they had a safe seat.Since then a failing council and Labour mp s should take a fair share of blame too for under representation has resulted in a failing city.

No because obviously my standatds must be higher than yours.Im trying to lift Sunderland up not put it down.If your content with a third rate city and incompetent council then that is your problem and your ilk.
After trying to read that load of drivel, id be very careful about mentioning "standards" mind.

Can you refer me to a post where you've ever been ever positive about Sunderland?
I am realistic.I dont wear rose tinted specs and laden with excuses like some on here (42) to cover the many many shortcomings of the ruling Labour council.

If you're wanting to say something and state your point at least make it readable.

Do you honestly think that it's up to the council to just build a series of sky scraper with viewing platforms and an arena in the city centre, with no private investment, no feasibility study into whether the demand is there, in such a small city. You dont go from a post industrial waste land to what you are suggesting without years of small incremental steps, that most people wouldn't even notice. Agree that a lot of time and money had been wasted over the years, but things are beginning to look up. Most of all we need private investment and jobs in the city centre to start the domino effect that ends with high rise office blocks with cafes on the top.

Again though, can you point to other cities of similar stature to Sunderland that have got it significantly better than Sunderland , so we can all look at what we could have had? It would make it a lot easier to get onside with you if we could all see what we are missing
Sorry initially the council must invest in itself before bringing on private investment. The council needs to build the foundatiion first befire the private investment structure .Sunderland is a small city compared to Manchester,Brum but is comparable to Nottingham,Hull,Newcastle, etc.Visit those cities and you will see what I mean.We have had the years of small incremental steps. The last shipyard closed over 30 years ago and 25 years the last pit.Time and money wasted by an incomoetent ciuncil made up of ex uniion shop steward types former pit and shioyarders out of their depth and riding the gravy train safe seat. What could have been achieved and what we have now with our coastline and riverdide natural assets are two different things.A refusal by some to acknowledge many missed oppoetinitues by a Labour council who still have a town not a city mindset. When they have shown ambitioys plans remember the numerous scale models and artists impressions since the early 2000s the end result is hugely watered down and they fail to deliver on original plans.I find the countless excuses and failure to recignise that past Labour councils and mp s since we became a city in 1992 have failed this city and its people quite alarming tbh.Mis management from the Labour council and inadequate representation from mp s.What could have been with the right professional non self serving people in control ?Your talking as if it is 2005.Its not.
The north east could and should have two great big cities but sadly it doesnt bevause of missed opportunities.,time ( money )wasted and a failure of recognition by its people to bring about the necessary change needed in the corridors of power by changing the council chumps into council chiefs.

Any Labour council connection by any chance ???

But isn’t the issue that Hull whilst a similar size to Sunderland in terms of population doesn’t have any real direct competition to it from neighbouring towns / cities?

Likewise isn’t Nottingham the largest and most prominent city in that area. You could use derby or even Leicester as a comparitor of course as it is a similar proximity from its regional core city.

The council have been wasteful, made mistake and missed opportunities but likewise they have had difficult economic decisions outwith it’s control in some cases which has affected progress.

See clueless. You cant compare us to Newcastle at all. Their catchment area is about 4 times the size of ours. It also got city status during the industrial revolution.

How does Newcastle have 4 times the catchment area?

North durham is newcastles catchment
South durham is boro/darlo
West durham is durham
Sunderland has east durham
Catchment is what you make. Take 20 years ago there was nothing in Durham, there still isn't much to be honest. Sunderland town city would have offered a lot more, as it still does now over Durham as it does over Hartlepool, Darlington, Bishop Aukland, Spennymoor etc....

Take some of this catchment back and think bigger rather than the are well, never mind attitude

I agree Sunderland offers more than Durham (retail wise) but theres convenience/distance. Someone from Consett or Darlo aint going to come all the way here to shop. Might pop over for something specific like air show / tall ships etc

Maybe not however we are still within a close proximity to those places so in theory could offer an attraction. We just need to find that neash
