No it’s not. It’s only busy in the summer mate. Believe me, I fish twice a week along there all winter.
The new baths is as busy as the aqua centre.
They make their money in the summer to cover the winter and have those excellent indoor facilities.A very well thought out seafront.

In fairness I’m not aware of any suggestions or changes you’d make to the city centre beyond what is already planned for, other than change the political leadership, as you have no confidence in their ability to deliver it. Is that fair comment?

Which indoor facilities?

Do you honestly think it’s the politicians who dictate where and how business comes into the various cities?

Most property transactions don’t even cross the politicians nose, other than when there is a press opportunity. The only time private business speaks to the council is when they are after money! Yeah
Politicians bring govt money into a town / city. They act as the voice when govt funding is being shared and invested.Sunderland has been poorily served by Labour mp s over many years who have often been more interested in discussing and debating non city issues.Poor representation on this front has seen Sunderland being the poor relation.

There are two built before the pier one on the pier side of the road and the other across the road.

it's the central government (Tories) who have slashed budgets to councils all over the UK. any lack of money or spending is because it's down to the central government in power no matter who the local council is.

They have just replaced temple park baths mate, just relocated. No one is traveling through from Newcastle or borough to use the swimming baths. No one is coming out from swimming or five a side and riding the dodgems in January. No one is going to the fair in August using the Big Dipper and then going swimming in the baths.

Too many past missed oppirtunities.A viewing tower, ( remember the spirit of Sunderland proposed at Holmeside) an ice rink arena, free city centre parking,Metro links to outlying areas,a modern railway station,Vaux - Sheepfolds footbridge, high rise buildings on Vaux (giving a city skyline effect),mp s who will give this city a true voice not three Labour female champagne socialists who dont even come close to discussing the real Sunderland issues which need addressing whethet that be their ignorance or maybe they are just out of touch .

I can’t really comment on how much the MP’s are lobbying in west minster, however I am aware that the Vaux closure / sale was brought up by Local MP’s in west minster at the time, with them raising concern over it.

As for the sea front why not leave the sea front for doing stuff outdoors and the city centre for doing stuff indoors.

This had been going on years and years befire the economic downturn. How many more upgrades does Newcadtle station have to get done by the regional network rail / nexus while Sunderland station remains an absolute boil.both inside and outsise ??? Who is fighting this city s cause in such matters ? Certainly not the ineffective 3 female useless Labour mp s.
Ditto metro extension plans.

A viewing tower? In what where and a view of what? The Holmeside development had a developer to deliver it but wen bust in the financial crisis. Also understand the bridges lobbied against the scheme at the time.

An ice arena failed historically although I know they are looking at the viability of this. They have previously tried to procure a snow operator but it didn’t stack up.only worth delivering if it is a viable option I couldn’t say it is or isn’t.

Metro link - totally agree I bet the city council and cllrs agree with you. I guess problem is development cost against return.

Vaux / sheepfolds footbridge - this recent Labour Party has confirmed that it is to be delivered.

Sunderland sky line is the delivery of Vaux. Again this is underway albeit is subject to attracting the businesses.

It’s because it’s part of the national train infrastructure, on the route of Scotland to London route hence why it gets investment. Sunderland is only of regional importance largely until recently serving Sunderland with Newcastle and Middlesbrough.

Dundee had a very similar train station up until very recently.

Well brexit is a completely separate matter in my opinion, but is something which puts another huge obstacle or excuse as you put it, to not deliver the Vaux / city centre vision.

But these are exactly what you say proposals, a change in central government can affect all these matters. As far as the station goes all they can do is ask. They can’t force network rail into it. I’ve voted Tory and labour in the past and I can honestly say imo there is no difference. Labour spend Tory save it back up.
The council themselves seem to play it safe a lot of the time, like the Vaux site. I’d love to see the council think outside the box for once but I suppose in most of its decision making their hands are tied by outside influences.

I should have also added if you can tell me a city in the UK that doesn’t charge for car parking?

Also if it was to be free parking then how does the council go about funding the shortfall within its budgets to maintain and operate them as well as offset the loss of profit / revenue they drive?

There are other developers. To view the city and beyond and out to sea.
As for culture the city of Adelaide should have been restored and site beliw the Wrarmouth bridge if only to restire some pride. How about an original Sunderland Flying Boat ww2 plane sited on the oppisite bank at St Peters ? Its all about building up the jigsaw and make up of the city centre as an attractive ,vibrant place to visit again and a domino effect but folliwing years if council failure Sunderland is playing catch up..Can you imagine Eldon sq saying yiu cant build a viewing tower in Newcastle because we dont want you to ? It just wouldnt happen.Sunderland is fast becoming a suburb of Tynside and I hate saying it Newcastle at the worst because of a failure of respective past Labour councils througj mis management and mp under rep.The rink did not fail at Crowtree. It had a leaking floor which the council did not repair and allowed the leisure centre to gradually decline and fall in to disrepair. The ice rink was probably the most popular facility.Ice hockey teams rep Sunderland. When such an attraction closed through managed decline less customers visit and had a knock on effect to rest of centre.

Othsr city s have attractions and facilities worth visiting for and paying such charges .Sadly at this moment and in recent years this city doesnt. The number of people i hear say I never visit the town when they used to.Making it user friendly and accessivility will bring numbers back. Its nit the whole answer but is a start.

Or if parking was free, where would the vistors & shoppers park? As by the time theyd get there all the spaces have been taken by the workers.

There were not other developers willing at the height of the financial crisis man. I’m fairly sure Eldon sq has deleted the development of the Pilgrim st site in Newcastle, so yes.

I don’t disagree about the Adelaide or the flying boat but equally I don’t know enough to say that there was a satisfactory or viable business case to approve the required investment.

As for the ice rink, do your think that the reason why it wasn’t maintained was because it didn’t create a big enough revenue or profit to be able to fund the maintenance? Again I don’t know the exact detail so difficult to comment. I must say it seemed a bad design to install an ice rink at first floor in the first place.

I thought the ice hockey team left for Durham or Newcastle?

I don’t honestly think that the decline of crowtree was the reason for the decline of the city, as I can’t see the relationship between the nightlife getting worse in Sunderland because of it.
Or if parking was free, where would the vistors & shoppers park? As by the time theyd get there all the spaces have been taken by the workers.
Exactly. In Newcastle they have alive after 5 as i believe it’s funded in part, perhaps in full, by its BID (NE1).

People have said there's a distinction between brexit /leave vote and the discontent about Sunderland state of development in the city centre . But I say there's an undeniable link. Certainly there's a correlation between "left-behind" post industrial places like Sunderland and the leave vote. There was one outlier in the north east during the 2016 referendum and it just so happens to be the biggest recipient of development/funding i.e. Newcastle
The government policy of core urban centres emanating wealth and prosperity to the region like in London, has undeniably failed in the rest of the country. Is it of any surprise when we see bigger disparities between communities throughout the country. Where some areas are so affluent and others have been left to rot. When people got to the ballot box in 2016 I've got no doubt this played a factor in leave vote. Imagine the people of east Durham or Redcar living in the most deprived areas of the country, little job prospects, high poverty, low living standards being asked to vote remain because there's a nice art venue and music hall 50miles up the road?
Politicians have been seriously out of touch with modern Britain, now we're left with a big shit pie called brexit and everyone going to have to take a bite

I haven't looked into the viability of this really, but ive had a quick look on Google maps at the footprint of the building(s). But does anyone think, if it is feasible and there is room, that it would be a nice touch if one or both of the current vaux brewery/double maxim brewery were invited to move to the vaux site? For example the maxim brewery only looks to be 50m x 100m. It would be a nice link to the history of the site. If there were to be space for a pub there, (which would make a killing with the office workers), it could be called The Brewery Tap.

I think a pub would work on the site albeit it will be difficult to replicate the brewery tap, but doubt they could / would accommodate the production facility as it would take up too much area which would be used to deliver high rise office space. Could certainly do it on sheepfolds or Farringdon row perhaps.

Always thought the old stables building would be great for a micro brewery, as it could have a great beer garden with some pretty good views up the river and over Galleys Gill, as well as Liebherr. Sadly without grant from outside bodies I think it would cost too much to bring it back into use.
