He plays a lot of the game with his back to goal tussling with defenders. There was one occasion he was running towards goal chasing a ball and whilst not really quick he didn't seem slow, which I'd assumed he probably would be.

Me too. Thought he did well for us on the night.

He can huff and puff all day long. But it already looks like the lad is not up to the job
Forwards who work their bollocks off are very valuable however not being able watch any games i wonder if any of the more astute posters can tell me.

Does he
a) work off the ball making diagonal runs dragging defenders with him disrupting their shape and making holes for other players to exploit.
Or
b) runs about like a headless chuck.

Playing like that, we'd have stayed up last season funnily enough
Teams in the premier league are more concerned about not getting beat. Don't get me wrong I would rather be in that league no doubt about it, but although the championship lacks quality it's canny entertaining.

There was one point in the second half where a cross was massively over hit, he charged after it, kept the ball in play and we were able to mount another attack.

I know it's a small thing, but the three of us watching commented how it's been ages since we have someone willing to do that sort of work. He's going to be useful IF we bring in players who can capitalize on what he brings. Would love him to start banging the goals in too but have my doubts.

Nothing he showed tonight has changed my mind. f***ing dross.
Changed your mind? After one game and an opinion based on some highlight footage from pre season?

Give him a chance you berk. Sounds like he worked his bollocks off for the good of the team.

I like him, and we need someone like that on the books who will work their bollocks off

He has played 1 game ffs

People criticizing players for performances during pre-season games are complete and utter morons.

He's played one f***ing game

ONE GAME!!!

He's already missed two penalties. Start worrying now. He's not very good.

No thanks

Its f***ing mental people are judging someone off f***ing pre season games

How about waiting till he has played a few games before writing him off???

He has played one football match ffs

Excellent work rate and attitude and needs a goal.

Where have we heard that before

We're in for another striker so, let's wait and see what side we have after the window shuts.

Why is he in need of a goal? He's played one game?

I'm under no illusions that he's not going to score 20+ or anything, but he was signed for half a million from League One so I don't expect him to.

I thought he was canny tonight. Worked his bollocks off, went close with a chance, created space with his movement, linked well with Grabban. He also gets in the oppositions faces and plays like someone who thinks he has won the lottery by signing for a club the size of ours.

You can't really win on here it seems. All we've heard for the last year is how people can't wait to get rid of the mercenaries and would be happy with someone who will just graft for the shirt. Vaughan is precisely that. Give him a break.

Completely agree, excellent post.

I get depressed reading this board, I don't know why some people even follow football, they seem to get no joy from it.

It's safe to say he isn't good enough

The oracle has spoken after 1 game!

Strange how you criticised people calling out Moyes after 15 games, as it wasnt enough time to judge.

His attitude reminded me of Sleeves, no such thing as a lost cause. Bit of fire in his belly and won't give defenders an easy ride. He could score a few, not likely to be Defoe or SKP prolific but could well be worth double figures and for 500k that would be very good value.

A bit unfair to cast judgement after 1 league game and yes I was at the Hartlepool friendly. I honestly think that he is 'work in progress' and needs time to bed into a team that is trying to find its feet. Unfortunately the longer that time goes on without him scoring will have an impact on his confidence, snatching at shots, trying too hard etc. He is definitely not a 'target man' so its a little unfair to make judgement of him playing in that role, not helped by balls being hit at him rather than to him. I think he will prove to be a useful squad player perhaps coming on as sub with fresh legs, with less responsibility and playing off an orthodox target man. We really do need to chill and take the pressure off new players, particularly those that give of their best and will only improve with encouragement.

He needs to control the ball before he thinks about scoring, only 1 game in though so can't criticise too much yet

Work rate all well and good, especially after it has been missing for a good few year. But sick to death at saying year after f***ing year we need quality, its happy clapping spenks like you who are happy with f***ing any old shit.

Million % this

Sick of hard workers in our team why we've never progressed

From a sitting position?
You noticed as well on his arse, hands in the air appealing for a foul. At least half a dozen times, me and my mate had a good laugh at his antics. I am just hoping he get a goal in the league for us early doors or we will have another whipping boy.

I'd be inclined to wait a few months before writing him off.

You're clearly a much more astute judge than I, so you get on down there and boo him til your lungs are hanging out on your chin

That'll show the lad, coming up here trying to win footy games for us, the cheeky tw*t
Obviously you don't know me then, I don't go around booing players, but what I will do is fight for this football club until it starts competing and fighting for players with the right calibre worthy of its fans and stature.

The money isn't there for quality, we all know that while Short is here.

So hard work and team spirit might be all we have this season
