VAR It starts tonight!

Looking forward to the raft of pathetic handball / minimal contact penalties that are awarded due to years of fans moaning about 'consistency'.

Also love how people band about the term 'clear and obvious' like it's a universally understood term in any given situation. Instead of debating whether there was an infringement on VAR people will just debate whether its clear and obvious instead. Repeatedly banging on about 'clear and obvious' doesn't help the VAR situation.

The sooner they bring in an appeal system the sooner all VAR issues will be ironed out.

I'm all for it, it will reduce the likelihood big name players and bigger clubs being able to referee games themselves, carragher was shocking for it.... It'll stop massive blunders and I couldn't give a fuck about the "product" or entertainment, for me sport is not about entertainment it's about winning and nothing else, this will level the playing field for teams who are dirty little shithouses.

I like the way it nullified diving in the world Cup. A key factor in why South American teams struggled. I fear though that referees looking at VAR will always give a penalty if they see any contact for fear of being accused of a lack of consistency.

We've had goal line technology for about 5 or 6 seasons in the premier league. The ref gets an alert on his watch within 5 seconds if it is a goal or not. No issue whatsoever. VAR won't be used for that.

A big toe would never have been spotted, but now it will be.
This daylight thing is a bit of a joke as it never existed as a rule, for example a player could be stretching for a ball, but his arm is behind him in line with the defender, yet his leg 2 yards further forward puts in a goal from an offside position.
You're either onside or offside, and now thanks to VAR those marginal calls which led to errors will be eliminated. It'll make things a lot fairer.
The daylight point I made is just one way of implementing a change, maybe it should be related to the torso rather than the extremities. There are ways and means to make it work. Bit like the finish line on a 100 metre race, its the chest thats the measuring point not the arm. My point that the technology and the written rule are decades apart remains. The rules need to be updated and brought into the technology era of the game in my opinion.

I suppose we will see how people feel about this after a season of micro analysis between any incident deemed worthy of another look.

How far back will VAR checks go? If you score, but it turns out you won the ball illegally 15 seconds earlier, would it be ruled out?

And this won't stop "big club bias", it's still up to the ref whether to use VAR.

Is it still intended to be used for clear and obvious mistakes.

Sean Dyche was saying in the briefing they had on VAR they said it would be used to give yellow cards for simulation.
Hope they do, it’s international cheating and is ruining the game. There’s a fair few players would end up getting 2 yellows

Whether you like it or loathe it, it’s going to be interesting this season!

Over the moon, got decent bets on number of offsides by Liverpool during the game, VAR has increased the number of offsides.....21/10 for 3 offsides for a really attacking Liverpool side, get on it folks, decent way to make £££ out of a game where the favourite is 1/8

Human error is part of the game, either in your favour or against. Taking that away to get every decision perfect is going to ruin the game as a sport and a spectacle.

Disagree, games should be decided by the mistakes of the players not the officials.......Many years ago Scarborough played Chelsea in the FA Cup at home. They were losing 1-0 with 5 mins to go when the ball rolled down the Chelsea defenders arm which was in the air at the time....The penalty was not given. Had the game been drawn the replay would have gone to Stamford Bridge, would have been televised with a shared gate and the entire debts of Scarborough would have been wiped out on the back of that one decision/penalty. .

About 2 years later the club went bankrupt for around £1 million and 125 years of history went to the wall.

While an extreme example, no way should games with such massive implications be allowed to be decided by human error where the technology is available and workingin many sports that can deal with it.

Scarborough only got thro to round 3 due to a questionable offside decision in one of the earlier rounds tho.

That looks a cracking bet! My only worry is where the linesman are now told not to flag immediately for a tight offside but let play develop. I worry that if that attacking team then loses possession the ref will just play on rather than pull play back for the offside. Will have to see how it pans out

No it won't. It'll go the other way and benefits divers as (as we have seen already) on VAR they simply look for any contact to give it.

I’d quite like to see it used for shirt pulling, but I’ve seen many games, particularly during the last World Cup where shirt pulling was rife and sod all was done about it, so I’m not holding my breath on that one.

When it was trialled they gave a pen to Liverpool for it. Was very slight but Salah went straight down.
