Used car market

I just traded in my just coming up to 3 years old golf gti

I bought it brand new and in 3 years it has lost 1500 quid i which is utterly mad on a brand new car..they will sell it used for more than I paid for it brand new

so an amazing trade in deal..but that means it also harder to get money of the new car..not impossible but much harder!

and choice is really limited if you dont want to wait for nearly a year for a factory order!

I had a choice of 3 cars one of which was the colour I wanted...and I was not guaranteed it as there would have been other uk dealers also trying to get that car!

Seems strange you’d trade a 3 year old car in when prices are through the roof to get another one.

Unless you needed to sell it.

yeah deal was up so its either buy it outright or get another

plus it mean I can get a similar but bigger car..been struggling with all my fishing gear with the golf.

These things can flip in a matter of days. Remember early covid days where it was the opposite because people were panicking about the economy? If we see another wobble things could turn really quickly. That being said, if they can resist the temptation to be greedy (there is probably a cartel going already) they will restrict supply indefinitely as really strong used prices mean they don’t need to discount vs list and the list prices can creep up too. Disaster for car buyers like.

I got a mega cheap 6 mrh old bmw msport 3 series tourer just before COVID.
I paid 25k cash.
ive checked on we buy any car it’s been creeping up. I set a figure of 30k but didn’t quite hit it but now it’s dropping weekly. Still well over what I paid though.

Try Motorway for a valuation. They were £3k more than we buy any car b

At least someone’s tried to answer the OPs question.

We'll be wanting a new or newer car in the next 5-ish years. We are considering an electric one.

With Diesel sales dropping and electric rising, there is surely going to be a lot of one or two years old diesels going cheap.

Could get a good 10 years out of those, but its a bit of an unknown what taxes and penalties will be lumpted onto them to force them out of the market.
Used diesel sales will rise when people realise this new petrol is shit

Need to change my car in next few months ….. have used car ( 2-3 year old ) prices started to reduce ?

Used prices seem to have been high / increasing for 2 years now. Been checking some used approved websites every couple of months and have seen sone similar cars advertised possibly abit lower

Look like they're coming down to normal levels, depends what you are after though
Dare not look for a similar van I bought back in February , probably lost a good few grand

Bubble has burst
Theyre still a piss take really 8-9 year old Mercs going for £15k and probably due a gear box service plus some bits shortly . Could really do with a change and been looking but i think ill run my 135k honda off its axles up to 200k . Im thinking thats 5 years and £3k should cover even the worst of mainatainance above servicing. The cash left in the bank will cover most of that at 4% .
If prices sort themselves I'll go in .

think December / January might see some value, must be about the slowest time of hear for car dealership sales

No idea but mate of mine in Sunderland says he’s just been offered a car for sale. Keyless push button start. Bit of minor work needed on the door handle but otherwise in good condition. Needed a bit of a cleanup though. Previous owner was a bit scruffy judging by the amount of used tissue paper and stiff socks all over the floor. Oddly there was a leather zip up mask in the glove compartment. Possibly he was into scuba diving.
Anyway, mate turned it down and called the cops as he suspected that the car might have been stolen.
