USA car hire?

Sorry, can't find the thread where people seemed to have some tips for beating the crazy prices at the moment.

My parents have just booked to go out to Orlando in September, but cars are north of £600 for 2 weeks. Which is bonkers compared to previous years.

Does anyone know how to get a more reasonable price?
Ta.

That's about the going rate now. Hertz used to be cheaper if you changed site to Bermuda but they are ridiculously priced now though so still expensive.

Usual of trying to book away from airport and getting taxi there but I've found it to be more expensive away from airport

We use Turo now, it’s basically Airbnb for cars.

You rent direct from a person, much cheaper and you know exactly what car you are getting.

Car rental prices from the traditional companies are insane at the minute, they sold a lot of their stock during the pandemic I believe and now with the chip shortage they don’t have enough stock.

Car hire is more expensive everywhere since COVID. All of the hire companies sold off their stocks to to survive the pandemic and haven't been able to build them up quick enough as demand has returned quicker than expected and manufacturers still aren't back to full capacity because of the Chinese supply chain problems.

Unfortunately thats the going rate mate. There's all sorts of shortages as well so make sure they have a Plan B just in-case! I.e. Avis had some sort of chaos going on at MCO a few weeks back, renting out cars they did not have!! Sending people to a zone to collect a car (any in that zone with the boot open) then when they had gone people were heading back bewildered to the reps stating no cars. They were just telling them "we are struggling with inventory....head back to the terminal and someone will rectify!"

Bonkers!!

Quick edit, it was Avis not Hertz!

Wow.
Aye, the usual out there is just pick a car from the parking area and drive off.

I knew about the shortages, we have the same issue in Spain for May.
But thought I saw a few suggestions on another thread recently.
Oh well.

People were rightly frustrated, thankfully no issue here (other than them telling fibs that we could now collect from the new terminal...nope, not yet...so onto the train to A/B then just grabbed a nice motor and was off!

We are paying about £600 for 10 days in May. So your price for September seems ok. We have used Andy, he’s great with customer service and usually has the best prices, but if by chance you find a better deal after you book with him let him know and he will at least match it. He actually beat a lower price we found, he also answers any queries really quickly. Last year the hire company tried to sneak in an extra charge, we emailed him and it was sorted by the next day.

Depends on their plans, but have they considered to just use Uber / Lyft? They are cheap, readily available and you don't have to pay hefty carpark fees.
If you are doing that check both before booking, one can be substantially more than the other just depending on availability of drivers.

Also the incoming stock will likely have little to no discount because of the supply constraints. Pre covid a firm like hertz will have got massive discounts as supply was plentiful

The previous business model was that the big firms would get huge discounts on purchase and then sell on the cars to the trade after 9-12 months - people don't want to rent old cars and they are good advertising for the manufacturers, effectively a paid test drive - so they could offer cheap rental as they weren't costing them much.
