I had just about managed to erase that image and the story out of my mind after reading it years ago, and saw your post. Absolutely awful but as you say so easy to fall into these rabbit holes.
When I was working in the Philippines there was a skyjack on a commercial flight PAL I think, the guy robbed all passangers of their wallets and phones before jumping with a home-made parachute, it didn't end well
The opposition was a lot better than him.

Friend of mine did it a few months ago from a sunderland bridge, drove there, parked his car, jumped, total shock to everyone.
