Unemployment shooting up

The high street has been in rapid decline way before this started.
Going to get even worse when loads of businesses decide working from home a lot more is the way forward, a lot less footfall in city centres, maybe a bit more in smaller high streets to pick up some of the slack.

Another 2,600 on top of that from OVO to be announced at 9am this morning.

Some tough times ahead.
What’s the crack for you Paddy? Was thinking the worst but seems I’m one of the few unaffected although will loose some long standing colleagues who are top lads. Bitter sweet for me today.

Working from home = more money to spend on socialising.
Let's make Sunderland great again.
Edit: Forget that, I meant more money to spend on luxury's.

And this doesn't even account for the fact that the millions currently on furlough are also (by definition) unemployed.

For huge numbers their jobs won't be there to go back to when furlough ends, and that number grows with every day that lockdown continues.

A year or two from now we'll be reading Dickens novels in awe at the golden age of prosperity they depict. That is if we haven't already burned them to keep warm.

Poor Tiny Tim.
RIP

Actually it's not, have to provide more PPE for staff at a substantial cost, max 10 people are allowed to attend so there's no limousines, catering etc, more people are having cremation without ceremony. So yeah, there are more funerals, they are as busy as ever but they are making a hell of a lot less per funeral.

What about coffin manufacturers then?

Must be one of JC Atkinson in Washy’s busier spells in their history - for better or worse.

Wonder if anyone on here grafts for them.

No doubt going to be hard times ahead, however there will be opportunities for those willing to take the risk and start a business.
I would like to think it could be a small step to a more self sufficient country.
Done correctly high streets could have a chance, low start up rents/rates/ grants for new businesses. Upper floors converted to residential and maintained to a decent standard ( tighter rules on rogue landlords - national register would be a start)
Local councils need to work with businesses and provide free car parking and where poosible and safe open up high streets to traffic again.
Better local policing to keep these areas safe and welcoming.

Retail parks are becoming tired and stale. Folk want to walk around streets with a variety of small independent retailers ..each offering something different.
It won't be anytime soon but let's hope things do start to change for the better

Guess they'll be doing alright as long as they can scale up to meet demand. But then everyone dies once, being really busy now just means they'll be less busy in the future.

I'm OK mate, glad you are too. Stabbed in the front!

Pretty specialised job not affected by digital and Havant seems to have escaped for the time being too. I think it's inevitable that we'll all be gone at some point though.

Was always on the cards, OVO wanted the customers, not the staff or non-core business that came with it. EVR package is canny shite too.
It's the underlying theme to all the repetitive shit trotted out on the politics forum and here.

Well you have the power to (partly at least) change it. Each 1000 mile march starts with but a single step.
If it's 99.9% tat then those buying it when it wasn't discounted must wear tat as well.
It's a good browsing shop, perfect if you're not a sheep.

It's a glorified jumble sale man.
