Undr the cosh podcast - Lee Howey

Won tickets to a match and a signed shirt the night he was doing hospitality hosting. Think it was a dreadful home defeat to Burton in L1 under Parkinson. Howey was great craic.

Howey was playing for Bishop in the HFS Loans league when butcher picked him up. That will have been 1 level below conference then and he must have been well into his 20s at the time.

Wont be many players make such a big step so it’s no surprise that he wasn’t brilliant. He did eventually play a few games as a CB in the PL so fair play to him for getting that high up if you ask me.

Fully agree with you Beezer. Excellent post.

Enjoyed his book a few years ago

Best quote in the book for me;

Two days after Middlesbrough, Paul Stewart, Chris Woods, Allan Johnston and Steve Agnew were given a tour of the new place while it was still under construction. Sitting in a hard hat on the floor of the unseated terrace of what became the West Stand, Paul mused aloud that the front row would be considerably further from the touchline than we were used to at Roker Park. He then alarmed the tour guide by leaping to his feet and bellowing: ‘Stewart! You’re f***ing crap!!!’ He sat back down and reflected: ‘Ah. I’ll still hear that.’

Does anyone have a copy of the book that they would like to sell? I didn’t even know he had a book out. Cheers

He wasnt great like, but he was good to have around. Had a couple of spells up front where he contributed with goals and always put himself about. Done reasonably well in defence but it was another strange call by Reid to leave out Eriksson for Howey in the PL season.

I recall a boxing day game against Bolton - maybe 95 where he went up for a ball at the Fulwell end, I think at a corner and had their keeper, centre back and if memory serves me correctly right back as well all needing treatment and our physio had to come on to help. Nothing major but that pretty summed him up - the Wolves games are well documented as well.

Enjoyed his book and enjoyed the podcast tonight.

iirc the crack was that his registration was held by some belgium or dutch club he'd had a spell at, so he couldn't turn out for a proper club and that's why he was turning out for clubs at that level. he was early 20s when he joined us.

Tbf he was playing that low because some Belgian team he was playing for had his registration. However after the injuries to his knee where he was told he'll never play football again he did well to get a decent career out of it.
